- Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Fishery Biologist to provide support for NOAA/NMFS research at the Point Adams Research Station in Hammond, Oregon. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. The incumbent will provide support to NMFS research studies involving the recovery of Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag data from salmonids in the Columbia River Basin. This position will support three studies being conducted to evaluate the survival and timing of juvenile and adult salmonids passing through the estuary. We are seeking a well-rounded fishery biologist who has a strong background in field research, writing, PIT technology, and personnel management. This person will act as the lead contract biologist and assist the NOAA project leader in organizing and directing field operations, which includes 20 seasonal field staff and three simultaneous sample efforts. Outside of field operations, the employee will analyze data, draft contract reports and peer-reviewed publications, and assist in ESA permitting and reporting. They will be responsible for leading data organization and management year-round and facilitating the development and testing of novel PIT technologies. This person will be an integral part of a team of four biologists required to conduct this work, therefore, the ideal candidate can thrive in a team environment and be comfortable taking on independent responsibilities. The work is conducted from two locations and varies seasonally. From approximately March through July, the duty station is located at NOAA’s Jones Beach Sample station near Westport, Oregon. During this period, the incumbent will spend significant time on research vessels assisting in sampling operations and project organization. When not underway, they will be located at the sample station office. From August through February, the duty station will be NOAA’s Point Adams Research Station office located in Hammond, Oregon. During this period, day trips to the sample location may be required. Some travel may be necessary, but only on a limited basis for conferences and interagency meetings. Duties Prioritize safety during all operations. Oversee PIT tag data collection, perform routine data analyses, and draft scientific reports and papers. Lead and perform data entry of PIT tag data including error checking, maintaining and updating databases (MS Access and PTAGIS), and organizing data in appropriate formats, e.g., tables, spreadsheets, etc. for agency and other reports. Lead sampling operations in conjunction with the NOAA project leader. Oversee scheduling of contract staff for the different research projects. Organize and conduct field operations, including logistics and personnel management. Construct, troubleshoot, and repair PIT antennas and equipment. Modify software programs and perform data queries as needed. Prepare summary reports of PIT data. Present data at scientific conferences and meetings This is a full-time position. - Qualifications
- Required Knowledge and Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years of graduate level education with emphasis in fisheries sciences or a related field. Minimum of five (5) years of experience with fieldwork and post-field data processing and analysis. Strong understanding of PIT technology. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, relational database software (particularly MS Access), statistical analyses packages, and bibliographic software packages. Strong scientific writing and oral communication skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting. Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action. Preferred Knowledge and Experience Experience leading fisheries research projects. Comprehensive understanding of PIT transceivers, including the Biomark Inc. IS1001MTS. Experience leading field crews with diverse backgrounds. Small boat operation. PIT antenna construction. Strong electronics background. Understanding of wireless communication equipment. Experience with towed sample gear. Strong understanding of knots, bights, snap-backs, and pinch-points. Knowledge of Salmonid life history and the Columbia River hydrosystem.
