Key Details: Compensation: $16.00 - $18.00/hour, DOE Start date: May 2023 End date: October 2023 Location: Near Saginaw, Michigan Housing: Rent reimbursement may be provided to qualifying technicians. Additional details: Travel between multiple projects and around individual sites will be required. Personal vehicle (4-wheel or all-wheel drive) use will be reimbursed. Job Summary: The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct standardized searches for bird and bat carcasses beneath wind turbines. Successful candidates must be able to work in a rural field setting, work well both independently and with others, and follow field and data entry protocols. Previous experience conducting carcass searches is preferred. Training will be provided. An average workweek will be approximately 30-40 hours, though there may be weeks requiring shorter or longer hours depending on seasonal objectives. Responsibilities include: Post-construction monitoring surveys. Standardized protocols to measure sources of bias in fatality surveys. In-hand (via specimen) identification, aging, and sexing of bird and bat species. This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties that may be associated with this position.
Qualifications
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred, but job experience may substitute. Candidates with field experience at regional wind projects will be given preference. Experience with bat and bird identification of Midwestern species or ability to identify species using guides/keys is preferred. Skilled use of computers, tablets, GPS units, topographic maps, compass, and other field equipment is required. Candidates must be organized, and able to collect and manage data, including implementing quality control measures. Able to work independently or as part of a team, and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, landowners, and other technicians. Employees must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise). Maintain focus for long periods of time. Follow all WEST safety protocols. Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job-related activities. Physical Requirements: Applicants must be in good physical condition; surveys will require walking for entire shifts in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable safety toed footwear (steel or composite-toe), clothing suitable for outdoor work in all elements, and binoculars (at least 8x42).
