Faculty Position Available in
Biological and Environmental Systems Engineering
Position : Assistant Professor, Tenure-track.
Location : Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The academic home for this position is the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Position Description and Responsibilities :
The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) at Cornell University seeks candidates for a tenure-track position aimed at developing a nationally recognized research and teaching program in systems-based methods with broad application to interconnected biological and environmental systems. This position has a balanced effort between research (50%) and teaching (50%) on a 9-month academic year basis. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in leveraging interdisciplinary quantitative systems engineering and analysis, and interest in novel applications relevant to the mission of the BEE Department and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. We are especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated expertise in investigating interconnected biological and/or environmental systems and will interact widely with colleagues in our department and across the university to build an understanding of the multiple trade-offs and competing objectives that may be present at the systems nexus.
The successful candidate will establish an innovative, high-profile research program that addresses critical problems of society today. Areas of specific interest include, but are not limited to, sustainable agriculture and/or food systems, food safety and security, and interconnected systems of food/agriculture, energy, water, and climate.
This is one of six positions generated as part of the digital agriculture initiative in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell, and offers exciting opportunities to link with the ongoing activities of the Cornell Institute for Digital Agriculture (CIDA ).
The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding to support a research program from sources such as NSF, USDA, DOD, DOE and other related federal sponsors, New York State agricultural research funding sources, and commodity boards. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate effectively in transdisciplinary projects with faculty in other departments and centers, which could include Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Cornell Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, Cornell Energy Systems Institute and the CIDA, as appropriate. In addition, departmental, college, and university committee service will be expected.
Teaching responsibilities will include two courses that integrate a biological and/or environmental perspective into engineering, with one focusing specifically on systems engineering for biological and/or environmental engineers at the undergraduate level. The second course will be negotiated with the candidate upon arriving at Cornell. Advising undergraduate students and mentoring postdocs and graduate students is also expected. This individual would contribute to our biological engineering BS program but would also be open to participating in our environmental engineering BS program and CALS initiatives in Environmental Science and Sustainability.
A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline is required with demonstrated capability and success in developing research and teaching programs at the interface of engineering and biological and/or environmental sciences. A strong background in engineering and a background in biological/environmental systems is required. An engineering degree is preferred.
We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, particularly those who are under-represented in science and engineering today. We have a vibrant departmental culture that values inclusion, diversity, honor and integrity.
Applications and Starting Date : Anticipated starting date is July 2020 or as negotiated. Applications include a CV, cover letter, statements of research and teaching interests, copies of four relevant publications, a statement of diversity, equity, and inclusion , three reference letters, and unofficial transcripts. Materials should be submitted online at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/14806 Applications will be reviewed starting November 2019 and will be accepted until the position is filled.
