Position Summary
The Bioinformatics Core Facility in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill is seeking a Bioinformatician to join our growing team. We are a group of analysts, developers, and engineers who collaborate with life science investigators with the overall goal of reducing cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality.
We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatician that will work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment to support the analysis of data from single-cell omics technologies. This position will work closely with life science investigators and other informaticians to aid in knowledge discovery by analyzing data from single cell technologies and generating interpretable results through figures, tables, writing grants, and generating publications. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and follow a research plan to accomplish project responsibilities with minimal supervision. The candidate will develop analytic models, work with technical or scientific databases, develop new software applications, or customize existing applications to meet specific scientific project needs. The bioinformatician must have strong written and oral communication skills to collaborate effectively with others. 
The candidate must be familiar with R/Bioconductor as well as a scripting language and have experience working in a Linux computing environment. An understanding of molecular biology, statistics, and genomic technologies is strongly preferred. A publication demonstrated record of working with single cell or spatial transcriptomic or epigenetic data is required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The candidate must have knowledge in DNA and RNA sequencing analysis. Experience working with public domain genomics databases, R/Bioconductor, the Linux environment, and being fluid in a scripting language such as Python is also required. The bioinformatician must have strong written and oral communication skills to collaborate effectively with others.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience working in a research analysis support environment, with cloud technologies (Docker, OpenStack), Javascript, and with SQL is preferred. Experience in machine learning/AI approaches for image processing and analysis is a plus.
