Departmental Overview
The Innovative Genomics Institute is a joint effort between the Bay Area's leading scientific research institutions, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with affiliates at UC Davis, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Gladstone Institutes, and other institutions. The IGI's diverse group of leading scientists have powerful interdisciplinary expertise. They conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility of using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger, and respond to climate change.

Responsibilities

  • Develops new tools to interpret and visualize molecular data, including CRISPR-based experiments.
  • Collaborates with automation engineers to help streamline data transfer between liquid-handling robots or lab equipment, data processing, and visualization.
  • Interacts with IGI research collaborators to curate bioinformatic tools to analyze their unique data.
  • Integrates clinical databases into command-line query tools for the lab.
  • Maintains a high-traffic web-platform for assessing the 'editability' of targetable sites within the genome to enable the creation of genome-editing therapies for human health.
  • Plans, tests and develops tools to enable genome engineers to appropriately target cells and delivery mechanisms to treat rare genetic disease, using publicly- available dataset or home-brewed pipelines.
  • Collaborates with PIs and other bioinformaticians on time-sensitive projects and research.
  • Interprets CRISPR experiments, maintain databases and repositories, and analyze next-generation sequencing data.
  • Applies complex bioinformatics concepts to design, develop, modify, debug, and evaluate software programs, systems, and web tools.
  • Ensures software being used in existing and new pipelines are properly configured to take advantage of highly distributed computing resources including bioinformatic software and pipelines are properly configured and deployed to take full advantage of computing infrastructure.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains web interfaces to share and display bioinformatics analysis and content with collaborators and other users.
  • Develops methods and process to train technicians or clinical laboratory staff on how to use new pipelines and analyze their data.
  • Maintains HIPAA-compliant server and securely manages access to stored data.
  • Securely stores data, builds web-platforms, and trains end-users on the new bioinformatic tools.
  • Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing, and builds user interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents.
  • Conducts bioinformatics programming and testing of new algorithms that interact with other related databases.
  • Analyzes existing programs or works to formulate logic for new systems, devises logic procedures, flowcharts, data analysis, codes and tests / debugs programs.
  • Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and sets system standards for analysis algorithms, tools, and infrastructure.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently or as part of a team, learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or PhD in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300.00 - $140,100.00.
  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 50% remote capability.
