Biochemist Research Scientist

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE ) Division has an opening for a Biochemist Research Scientist to  join the BioEngineering and BioMedical Sciences Department .

 

In this exciting role, your primary focus will be to perform research investigations into molecular mechanisms of disease risk and susceptibility. This position will identify phenotypic outcomes associated with environmental exposures by using a strategy that integrates systems biology and discovery approaches with mechanistic information to ultimately address key questions concerning the effects of environmental exposures on human health.

 

This position has an anticipated start date of April 1, 2024.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide leadership in the development of a systems level understanding of disease risk. 
  • Develop and characterize new models for disease risk or processes and pathways involved in disease. 
  • Scientifically lead work on complex problems and integrate concepts from broadly related areas of research. 
  • Communicate research accomplishments to principal investigator (PI) and division leadership.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars. 
  • Assist with writing research proposals and records of inventions. 
  • Serve as supervisor for early career staff including Research Assistants and Research Associates.
  • Train early career staff including Research Assistants and others in the lab who require guidance with cell culture methods and data analysis.
  • Maintain appropriate records and manage data, archive cells, and other research materials. 

 

What is Required:

  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biostatistics, Biochemistry, Computational Biology, or a related field and minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in in-vitro cell culture and mouse models or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the programmatic management of large-scale research and research/production programs and operations.
  • Experience training and directing the work of early career, technical support staff, and/or students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including a strong record of publication in high impact internationally recognized and peer-reviewed journals, experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience performing collaborative research, and representing and promoting scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biostatistics, Biochemistry, Computational Biology, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience serving as Postdoctoral Fellow. 
  • Demonstrated ability to write proposals and obtain funding.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $98,844 - $158,136 per year for job code S03.2, which fits within the full salary range of $98,844 - $184,512 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
