Job Summary
The Office of Practice, in the College of Nursing, is seeking to fill 1 vacancy.
Billing and Collections II, Level 8
  • Serves as a lead for general billing issues and concerns with clinical staff and patients.
  • Processes and posts all payment types in the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Generates and mails billing statements from the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Answers telephone and in-person inquiries regarding the explanation of benefits documents, charges, payments and adjustments, and amounts due.
  • Trains and supervises student workers.
  • Identifies coding irregularities within the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 7
  • Processes and posts insurance payments in the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Generates and mails billing statements from the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Manages patient accounts, sets up budgets, and manages collections.
  • Answers telephone and personal inquiries and routes to appropriate personnel.
  • Trains and supervises student workers.
  • Identifies coding irregularities within the electronic practice management/health records system.
  • Provides training related to coding errors.

All positions at East Tennessee State University are contingent upon sufficient funding.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Billing and Collections Specialist II, Level 8
  • Knowledge of the medical billing and collections revenue cycle and ability to recognize data trends and recommend adjustments and implement appropriate changes to our processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to align tasks and responsibilities with appropriate team members
  • Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
  • Knowledge of coding for claims, Coding certification.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security.
  • Efficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to solve problems and work with a team.

Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 7
  • Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
  • Knowledge of coding for claims and coding certification.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security.
  • Efficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to solve problems and work with a team.
Required Qualifications
Billing & Collections Specialist II, Level 8
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Professional Coder
  • 5 years of experience in medical office billing and coding
  • 3-5+ years experience with electronic health records (EMP/HER) system
  • 3-5 years experience as a CPC
  • 3-5 years of experience with insurance claims processing

Billing & Collections Specialist, Level 7
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-2 years experience in medical office billing and coding
  • 1-year billing functions on electronic health records (EPM/EHR) system
  • Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid billing regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Billing & Collections Specialist, Level 7
  • Certified Professional Coder preferred.
