Job Summary

This is a full-time, career position. Under the direction of the GROW Project Manager, this position serves as a Certified Phlebotomist Tech II for several brain health research studies under the leadership of Dr. Rachel Whitmer, PhD and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

The Research Phlebotomist will provide adult and geriatric phlebotomy, including individuals with cognitive impairment and dementias. The role includes data entry, specimen transport, and performing specimen processing for all study related specimens. The incumbent will conduct venipuncture blood collections in a home, community, and/or research clinic setting most days of the week. The phlebotomist will be required to travel within the Greater Sacramento area to perform venipuncture and collect specimens in home and community-based settings and then transport collected samples to the UC Davis Health campus in Sacramento. The phlebotomist will serve as a clinical resource liaison for study staff as well as assist in screening, recruitment, and scheduling for research purposes.

This position requires an extensive amount of handling and processing of multiple types of biological samples in various settings. The incumbent will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, ICH/GCP guidelines, UC Davis Health System policy and procedures, study protocols, and standard operating procedures. The GROW Project Manager will provide direction of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Phlebotomist Technician
  • CA Certified Phlebotomist Technician- Must be Licensed as a “Certified Phlebotomy Technician” as required by current State of California phlebotomy regulations and guidelines.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license upon hire.
  • CITI Training must be completed once hired.
  • US Davis Lab Training must be completed once hired.
  • Experience following office and/or research protocol(s).
  • 2+ years experience in phlebotomy of adults, including individuals with cognitive impairment and dementias.
  • Experience processing specimens in a laboratory or conducing other laboratory work that requires attention to detail, labeling, and measurement of materials.
  • Must be flexible and available to work evening and weekend hours according to appointment scheduling needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to learn other computer programs.
  • Skills and knowledge to practice safe handling, transport, and processing of biological specimens, such as blood, placenta, breast milk, urine, saliva, feces, and hair samples or in handling other hazardous materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy—sufficient to maintain participant files and databases on a large number of study participants.
  • Must be able to drive to collection location and transport samples in a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement will be provided) in the Greater Sacramento Area.
  • Skills and ability to travel to various work locations to attend department or study meetings or participate in special projects, training, etc.
  • Skills and ability to drive up to 1 hour each way to participant homes and hospitals to complete specimen collections.
  • Administrative skills and ability to exercise good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in making decisions.
  • Proficiency in speaking English and Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with members of the public in community- or home-based settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the study objectives, procedures, and policies desired.
  • Ability to make various reagents and effectively use a micro-pipettor or other laboratory tools.
  • Completion of IRB Human Subjects training and HIPAA trainings (must be completed within 30 days of hire).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with participants and colleagues.
  • Strong ability to work independently.
  • Strong ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Proactive in providing feedback or suggesting improvements to workflows.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills to communicate with older adults to develop and maintain a good working rapport

The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) is a large complex research, teaching, and clinical department that is part of the UC Davis School of Medicine and UC Davis Health.
