Bilingual/Bicultural and Biliteracy Education (Spanish Language)
Assistant Professor
Tenure Track
Fall 2024 (August 2024)

The Department of Literacy, Early, Bilingual, and Special Education (LEBSE) in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development at the California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant Professor in Bilingual/Bicultural and Biliteracy Education (Spanish Language) beginning August 2024. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Bilingual Authorization Program (BAP), with specialization in the Spanish language, Latinx culture, and literacy. Additional teaching responsibilities may be in the multiple and single subject credential program, within the following disciplines of literacy and multicultural education, among others, as well as the master’s program in multilingual multicultural education, depending on the candidates’ areas of expertise. Ideally, the candidate will assist with coordination of the Bilingual Authorization Program, which is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing accredited added authorization for both candidates in the preliminary credential programs and existing PK-12 educators.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an asset-based (anti-deficit) perspective on multilingualism and have broad knowledge of bilingual/dual immersion education, translanguaging, raciolinguistics, biliteracy, biculturalism, applied linguistics, first and second language acquisition theories, TK-12 emergent bilingual children, and sociopolitical issues surrounding policies and language learning.

Overview: The Kremen School of Education and Human Development’s (KSOEHD) mission is recruitment  and development of ethically informed leaders for classroom teaching, education administration, counseling, and higher education. Our programs are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Together, the programs aim to foster candidate dispositions of collaboration, valuing diversity, critical thinking, ethical judgments, reflection, and lifelong  learning. Our mission is realized through a framework of teaching, scholarship, and services that prepare highly competent educators and human development specialists, while providing professional support and leadership to the community, promoting applied research, and providing experiences and opportunities that will enable employed professionals to remain current in their fields. Additionally, the KSOEHD hosts an Equity Scholars Program, providing funding to support research related to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.

The Literacy, Early, Bilingual and Special Education department includes a dynamic group of faculty within a variety of programs in education. The department focuses on post-baccalaureate courses including teacher credential, certification, and graduate courses. Department faculty across literacy, early childhood, special education and multilingual programs have collaborated to create unique teacher residency models with urban and rural district partners across the Central Valley region.

The Fresno State Bilingual Authorization Program (BAP) embraces and celebrates the bi/multilingualism and bi/multiculturalism of preK-12 children and families, pre-service teachers, teacher candidates, and in-service teachers in California’s Central Valley. We adopt a “grow your own” approach to filling the increasing need in our region for future bilingual/dual immersion teachers. The BAP approaches the preparation of future teachers from a world languages/dialects and translanguaging perspective that represents cutting-edge research on bilingual and emergent bilingual students. We affirm, validate, and centralize culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies, such as the translanguaging skills of the community, and we prepare teacher candidates that embody this same stance. The BAP program offers both Spanish and Hmong pathways for students pursuing their initial teaching credential to become authorized to teach in bilingual/dual immersion classrooms and is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.
