Summary of Duties:

This position coordinates the WSU Benton-Franklin Extension Master Gardener Program and enhances volunteer opportunities with other existing local programs. The position creates stable programs focused on public outreach conducted by engaged volunteers who are peaceful, productive, and appreciated.  Currently, the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program provides horticulture education and other related services to the Benton and Franklin counties through over 100 volunteers. 


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; demonstrated work experience using these programs.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. The office is based on a matrix organization necessitating cooperation from different agencies, volunteers, and faculty across multiple lines of supervision.
  • Experience working/collaborating with multiple public agencies, NGOs, and individuals in partnerships.
  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, program assessment and evaluation.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work may be solitary in remote locations.
  • Ability to remain alert while driving for long distances and to drive extended   distances occasionally.
  • Flexible work hours that occasionally include evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional travel outside the county is expected on a year-round basis including possible overnight travel
  • Reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed) is required.
  • While using a private or WSU vehicle for official business, the successful candidate must have current automobile liability insurance (meeting the requirements described in RCW 46.30.020 and RCW 46.29.090) and will possess a valid driver’s license. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, the Master Gardener or WSU Extension programs. 
  • Three (3) years of related program experience, which may include supervisory- level experience.
  • Experience in mediation services.
  • Ability to act with professional discretion when resolving programmatic conflicts.
  • Strong demonstrated written skills requiring limited editing and supervision in preparing reports, evaluations, press releases, synthesis of a broad range of materials, and effective written conveyance of program information to the public and program participants. A skill test may be administered, and candidates may be asked to demonstrate their writing abilities by drafting a sample product or demonstrate computer proficiency by creating a sample product.
  • Strong demonstrated verbal communication and listening skills: public speaking, effective conveyance of program information to the public, program participants, and decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to and collaborate with a wide range of people from varied social and economic levels, ages, races, ethnic backgrounds as well as in rural, suburban, and urban settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to use database software.
  • Extended teaching experience in informal or formal (i.e., school) settings. 
  • Familiarity with social media: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

Monthly Salary:

$3,750.85 - $4,162.53

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

This is a temporary position expected to end on December 31, 2023. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment. Funding has been renewed successfully for several years and we expect funding to continue to be renewed.
