Position Summary
Under general supervision of the Zone Manager, the Basic Mechanic (HVAC) performs HVAC and multi-craft maintenance, operation, and repair of commercial/academic and multi-tenant building systems as needed including but not limited to the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC equipment and systems. Multi-craft maintenance activities may include working with plumbing, electrical work, paint and carpentry. Employees in this position will be required to do all mechanical and operational duties and to assist other Mechanics as needed. Must be able to perform while working alone or in a team setting. Willingness to work overtime to support the University is a requirement.
This position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    • Assists with, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of HVAC systems.
    • Assists with the repair and maintenance of fan coil units, building loops, pumps, heat exchangers and forced air components (VAV’s, circuit setters, and controls, etc). 
    • Assists with troubleshooting HVAC controls systems with the use of our energy management system.
    • Responds to work orders in and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner.
    • Performs preventative maintenance.
    • Pro-actively identifies, communicates and addresses needs without direction when appropriate.
    • Maintains data per departmental policy.
    • Utilizes materials, supplies, tools and other University property in a safe, productive manner.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Technical school classes.
    • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated abilities with the Microsoft office suite.
    • Effective organization skills and ability to prioritize workload.


    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification; 24 hour availability for emergencies and willingness to work overtime.
    • State of Missouri Class E or above driver’s license or the equivalent from another state prior to employment or within first 30 days of employment.
    • Completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (i.e. Ranken Technical College) or equivalent training program.
    • Five years' professional experience.
    • Proficient at maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing systems. This includes, but not limited to, fixtures such as toilets, faucets, showers, as well as building infrastructure systems such hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, grease/chemical traps, fire pumps, loop systems, softeners, water heaters, and drainage systems, etc.
    • Skilled in working with a variety of pipe types including copper, iron, PVC, etc.
    • Capability to clear a range of stoppages from sink traps and toilets to cabling out main drains.
    • Effective while working alone and within a team environment.

    Salary Range
    $27.38

    The salary rate for this position is determined by the current union contract. Please note that there may be salary differentials for working second or third shifts.
