Basic Life Research Scientist

We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated and team-oriented Research Scientist to join the Blau Lab in the Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology, in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Stanford University School of Medicine. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary and dynamic research team on aging and regenerative medicine.  

We recently published in Science that decreasing the abundance of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) triggers premature muscle aging in young mice, and increasing its levels rejuvenates muscles of aged mice.  This physiologic shift in PGE2 concentration is mediated by 15-PGDH, the enzyme that degrades PGE2, which appears to be a pivotal molecular determinant of muscle aging. In mice and humans, 15-PGDH expression increases with age. Even brief systemic 15-PGDH inhibition not only augments muscle mass and strength, but also increases time to exhaustion on a treadmill, which suggests a more general amelioration and rejuvenation of aged tissue function. 

The position requires a highly self-motivated, accomplished individual with an outstanding track-record of innovation and success in both graduate school and postdoctoral research with a sustained publication record. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to the molecular and cell biology aspects of the lab’s efforts.  Primary cell culture and rodent models of aging and injury will be a primary tool used by this investigator.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of success in establishing and performing collaborative research with excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to take initiative, provide strategic input, problem solve and work in teams.

A PhD or MD/PhD degree with at least 5 years of relevant postdoctoral research experience in molecular, cellular, or developmental biology, in academia and/or industry, is required. Further training beyond the postdoctoral training is desirable.  A strong background in molecular biology, mammalian cell culture, assay development, and microscopy are essential.  The candidate should also have mouse handling experience. Expertise in muscle biology, aging, or regenerative medicine is desired but not required.  

The successful candidate must be technically rigorous, possess exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail and have a track-record of excellence, innovation, and productivity in research. Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills are imperative. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and will have a key role in the training of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research assistants.
