Job Summary

The Department of Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality is one of 13 departments within the Division of Student Affairs. It provides the campus community and guests with high-quality, efficient, and innovative event services and dining options in a variety of settings dedicated to accentuating and enhancing the campus experience in a diverse community.

This position is an integral part of our dining operations staff. Led by experienced culinary professionals, we offer staff the opportunity to work in newly-renovated facilities and are committed to using quality ingredients and processes. This position plays an integral role in accomplishing this goal by utilizing a broad range of baking skills and equipment to prepare fresh and delicious bakery items to be served daily in all venues on campus.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$18.91 per hour


Required Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience that is comparable to that described in the lower level of this series. This could include work such as simple food preparations before cooking or serving raw food; compiling and preparing ingredients before cooking, setting tables, serving food, and cleaning up food service equipment and areas.
3. Demonstrated expertise in a commercial bakery setting (i.e., scratch baking bread, cookies, cakes, pastries, etc.).
4. A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam. Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Full knowledge and acceptance of principles of diversity.
2. Knowledge of safety and sanitation principles.
3. Knowledge of the use and care of utensils and equipment.
4. Good communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to produce results working as part of a team or committee.
6. Ability to work with and supervise other kitchen employees; ability to train and instruct student employees; good customer service skills.
7. Food Service Sanitation Certificate is beneficial but not required.

This position requires standing, walking, use of fingers and hands, reaching, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, smelling, tasting, and seeing. It also requires the ability to stand for an extended time without a significant rest period. The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
