RESEARCH SECURITY OFFICE (UA-RSO-IUBLA)

The IU Research Security Office (RSO) was created by the Office of the Vice President for Research to address the security risks posed to the research environment at Indiana University and to assist researchers with efforts to protect themselves, their research data and methodologies, publication rights, and intellectual property.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with other RSO staff to build, deploy, and maintain secure Microsoft Government Community (GCC) Cloud High environments including Defender for Office 365 and Endpoint, data loss prevention, Microsoft information protection, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Sentinel, governance and compliance for collaboration services and other services.
  • Collaborates with the University Security, Policy, and Networking groups to improve and share information security practices.
  • Consults with researchers to gather project requirements to design and implement secure solutions within Azure.
  • Performs and documents System Risk Assessments and Security Plans.
  • Designs and implements security solutions to enforce regulatory compliance requirements (NIST 800-171, NIST-800-53, CMMC) on all assets.
  • Utilizes the NIST Risk Management Framework to maintain appropriate levels of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability of all systems.
  • Implements tools for continuous monitoring of systems to ensure that all deployed security controls remain effective.
  • Facilitates tactical and strategic planning discussions with stakeholders to reach consensus on direction, project scope, or common understanding of complex issues.
  • Provides recommendations on project scoping, planning, prioritization, resource allocation, and schedule assignments.
  • May establish and maintain a favorable eligibility determination for access to sensitive national security information at the required level.

General Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, and implements advanced information security software and systems to address security exposures and potential threats; evaluates, recommends, and implements vended security software.
  • Acts as point of escalation for response to information security incidents; may provide leadership for information security emergency response teams and/or for other information security projects.
  • Provides advanced level of information security technical and practical consulting; makes recommendations on appropriate strategic security actions; performs digital forensic investigations as appropriate.
  • Develops and implements advanced solutions to address complicated information security vulnerabilities and threats; partners with information security analysts to ensure exposures and risks are avoided and/or addressed.
  • Documents solutions and may write reports and/or papers as needed.
  • Researches and stays abreast of current higher education information security environment and trends; stays up-to-date on information security engineering best practices, tools, and approaches; disseminates information to team members and junior peers to promote best practices as appropriate.
  • Collaborates and participates in committees to share and improve information security practices across the university.
  • Often provides guidance and support to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science or related field)

Preferred

  • Strong experience in implementing, monitoring, and maintaining Microsoft Azure solutions, including major services related to Compute, Storage, Network and Security
  • Strong knowledge of Backup, Restore, Recovery and high availability strategies for Microsoft Azure environments
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving Azure environment performance issues, connectivity issues, security issues, etc.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot Azure server and SQL database related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resources

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
