Job Description:

IT Services is seeking applicants for a highly skilled Azure Administrator to continue our growth into Microsoft Azure and all the exciting challenges and opportunities it provides. This position interfaces regularly with other Systems Administrators, Network Architects and Engineers, Identity Administrators, and Information Security to help design the best approaches to cloud infrastructure. We are committed to Azure and are excited about moving more of our technology to the numerous services Microsoft provides. Candidates must have previous Azure experience and preferably, architectural experience. As a higher education institution, there are many competing design goals, and we need someone who can be creative and produce unique solutions that solve many problems simultaneously. Textbook solutions do not always work for us, so ingenuity and passion for problem solving are critical for success in this position. Iowa State is still new to cloud-native solutions, so experience migrating to cloud-native solutions is extremely helpful. Thus far, Iowa State has worked with the following Azure technologies:

  • Azure Virtual Machines

  • Azure Storage

  • Azure Kubernetes Service

  • Azure Batch

  • Azure Container Instances

  • Azure MySQL

  • Azure App Services

  • Azure Virtual Desktop

Although focused on Azure, there are still underlying operating systems that need attention. Ideal candidates would have both Windows and Linux administration skills and can serve as a general systems administrator. Knowledge of common automation techniques involving PowerShell, Ansible, and Bash will be critical for managing those full VMs (Virtual Machine) at scale and helping minimize the actual administrator interactions. Ideal candidates will possess effective verbal and written communication skills, the ability to creatively solve problems, strong dedication to updated and accurate documentation, and work successfully within a team environment and distributed IT environment. Experience within a higher education environment is preferred, but not a requirement.

This position will be hired at either a Systems Analyst II or III.
