Job Responsibilities:
Successful candidates will be expected to engage in classroom and clinical teaching, and service that will contribute to the university and profession.
Classroom faculty members are qualified nursing experts who are responsible for teaching 5-50 students in a classroom or remote online setting. He/she creates a syllabus using the approved template, selects reading and viewing resources, develops tests and assignments, plans and delivers instruction, and evaluates student learning through a variety of tests and assignments. The classroom instructor holds weekly office hours for students, and is available during the week to answer students questions in person, by email, or by videoconference.
For Clinical Teaching, faculty members are qualified nursing experts who supervise 4-10 students in an off-campus healthcare setting. The instructor supports each student in providing care to a variable number of patients with a variety of clinical conditions. The instructor assists the student to perform nursing actions within the defined scope of practice for that clinical level. The clinical instructor facilitates a pre-briefing meeting, a mid-shift huddle, and a post-conference debriefing among the students. The clinical instructor reviews and assigns grades to each students patient data sheet and care plan.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree in nursing or related area preferred.
- One year of full-time direct patient care experience within the last 5 years in the clinical area that corresponds to the teaching assignment (medical surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, psychiatric mental health nursing, or community health nursing). Acute care clinical experience in these clinical areas is required for teaching community health related courses.
- Upon hire, the faculty member must be licensed as a registered nurse in California.
- A strong commitment to teaching and scholarship, experience and willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University.
