- Description
- We are seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking avian survey field technician for a project studying avian biodiversity at photovoltaic (PV) solar energy facilities from early May to mid-July. Fieldwork will be conducted at PV solar energy facilities in New York and Massachusetts and reference sites that may include agricultural fields, pasture, meadow, and patches of shrub and forest habitats. The selected applicant will primarily be responsible for conducting standard avian surveys (point counts, line transects) and vegetation sampling (e.g., structure, composition). Daily number of hours in the field will vary and will consist of early mornings. The selected applicant will be paid $500-600/week for approximately 10 weeks depending upon experience. Field vehicle is NOT provided, but there may be opportunities for carpooling with the PI on occasion. Mileage will be reimbursed, and project-related lodging will be provided as needed. Hired technician will be required to comply with UMass-Amherst and local and state COVID safety protocols and mandates to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
- Qualifications
- - Preference for individual located in New York or Western Massachusetts. - Applicants must have previous experience conducting multi-species avian surveys. - Ability to identify eastern birds by sight and sound. - Ability to attend in-person or virtual safety training for working at operational PV solar energy facilities. - A valid U.S. driver’s license, vehicle, and comfortable driving long distances (>3 hours) between field sites.
