Position Summary
Position is responsible for performing required autopsy services. Assists with the training of prosectors (residents, fellows, medical students) in postmortem techniques.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Transport bodies to and from the morgue.
  • Verify the completeness of autopsy requisitions and sign-off of the Pre-autopsy Checklist.
  • Perform organ removal and ensure complete post-autopsy cleanup.
  • Train prosecutors (medical residents and fellows) in autopsy procedures.
  • Perform the calibration and maintenance of instruments and equipment as required.
  • Maintain the required inventory of formalin, autopsy supplies, and personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure that specimens are washed and ready for autopsy conferences.
  • Store and maintain teaching specimens used for resident and medical student education as needed.
  • Assist with the collection of research tissue and ensures that appropriate permission has been obtained.

Working Conditions

  • Comply with all institutional EHS safety regulations, as well as CAP requirements.
  • Laboratory environment with potential exposure to formalin, human tissues and blood-borne pathogens.
  • On call for approved after-hours autopsies as deemed necessary by the attending pathologist or Medical Director.
  • Sufficient physical strength and stature to safely move a body from a gurney or bed to a table and back using available lifting equipment; this is particularly important outside of normal working hours when other staff members are not available to assist.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant educational background, e.g., anatomy, biology, chemistry.
  • Experience in autopsy and/or mortuary science.


Required Qualifications

Equivalent of Associates degree and/or least five years related experience is desired.

Salary Range
$24.80 - $37.19 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
