JOB SUMMARY

The Office of Audit and Management Advisory Services (AMAS) is seeking an Audit Director to plan, develop, and execute the University’s overall internal audit functions under the general direction of the Chief Audit Executive. The Audit Director will support AMAS activities on the Storrs and Farmington campuses, with a primary work location on the Storrs campus. This position has access to a variety of confidential information, including that used in collective bargaining.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in the annual risk assessment process and overall audit planning with the Chief Audit Executive and is responsible for establishing the day-to-day audit schedule.
  • Verifies the integrity of each audit conducted by assigned staff to confirm financial records, reports, and related fiscal matters were examined by the auditor and that each area audited is in compliance with pertinent statutes, regulations, and sound accounting principles.
  • Reviews and approves the audit reports produced by each auditor prior to forwarding them to the Chief Audit Executive for transmittal.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Audit and Management Advisory Services, impacting both UConn and UConn Health.
  • Assists with the oversight and management of the Department’s budget.
  • Represents the Chief Audit Executive in their absence.
  • Provides direct supervision to assigned staff including hiring, evaluation, training, and discipline.
  • Serves as a key liaison to University management regarding audit functions and develops a network of audit liaisons throughout the institution.
  • Assists the Chief Audit Executive with presentations to the Board of Trustees and Senior Administration when necessary.
  • Conducts audits (critical reviews, examinations, and appraisals) as assigned, to protect University assets and other interests, on:
    • Financial records and reports and related fiscal matters to appraise integrity, and compliance with pertinent statutes and regulations.
    • Operations policies and practices to appraise effectiveness, and compliance with statutes, regulations, standard procedures, and sound business practices.
    • Performance to appraise achievement of both tangible and intangible objectives.
  • Conducts management analyses, feasibility studies, etc. as requested.
  • Evaluates existing and proposed systems and procedures to determine efficiency, effectiveness, risk, and compliance with sound accounting and management principles.
  • Analyzes and evaluates results of audits, reports findings, and makes formal recommendations for a range of corrective actions.
  • Reviews findings and formal recommendations with appropriate supervisory staff and administrative officials of areas audited and assists, as appropriate, in implementing corrective action.
  • Follows up on audit recommendations to appraise and press for implementation of recommended changes.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business management, or a related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of the methods, theories, and principles of financial, operational, and performance auditing.
  • More than 5 years of experience in professional auditing.
  • Professional certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to regularly exercise independent judgment and initiative.
  • More than 5 years of supervisory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience in higher education and/or healthcare.
  • Information technology audit experience.
  • Knowledge of research-related compliance.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. The Audit Director position will support AMAS audit activities on all UConn and UConn Health campuses, with a primary work location on the Storrs campus. This role requires in-person work with flexibility for telecommuting on a hybrid basis subject to authorization and University policy.
