Position Description

The Audiovisual Engineer provides technical oversight and support for all AV systems dedicated to helping Harvard Business School (HBS) achieve its mission.
As part of HBS IT's Media Services team the Audiovisual Engineer collaborates with multiple stakeholder groups within and outside of IT to design, implement, maintain, and support an advanced ecosystem of innovative AV solutions. The team oversees more than 250 classrooms, conference rooms, auditoriums, and other convening spaces spread across 35 campus buildings, and their services are designed to maximize the user experience for both in-person and remote participants.
The ideal candidate will be a mature, innovative, expert technical leader in the AV design and engineering space, with strong communication skills and a desire to lead and develop others to achieve their full potential and meet School needs.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as internal expert on HBS Media Services audiovisual systems and tools
  • Independently manage work queue and customer expectations, balance tasks of mixed priority, and clearly report on all assignments
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to AV technicians; helping to build technical aptitude, systems knowledge, and confidence among the support team
  • Research and identify AV solutions that meet the needs of a campus event or program
  • Act as escalation point for AV technology incidents Assist in AV Infrastructure design and implementation, as well as maintenance and repair
  • Consult with all Media Services staff, customers, and partners to identify innovative technology solutions to aid in supporting the pedagogy; leverage current technology in the HBS portfolio
  • Oversee tracking and management of inventory
  • Collaborate with management to assist in budget planning for AV supplies, equipment, and other needs such as projection lamps and replacement parts
  • Ensure all Media Services staff are aware of and trained on new installs and upgrades of technology prior, to support of events and presentations
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of vendor support and services
  • Monitor AV systems and processes, reporting and tracking any trends
  • Explore emerging AV technologies that support current and future School needs
  • Contribute to IT's knowledge management platform by creating new AV-related articles or improving existing articles 
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

In addition to the minimum of two years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience required above, an additional two years' experience is required, totaling a minimum of four years of relevant work experience required.
The following are preferred:
  • Experience delivering outstanding AV services and support in large, demanding, higher education or corporate environments
  • Strong aptitude to quickly learn and institutionalize business, technical, and process knowledge; interest and ability to assess and improve work processes
  • Excellent analytical skills; a desire to identify and resolve the root cause of systemic technical or process issues and drive continual improvement
  • Ability and desire to capture and maintain accurate technical documentation and knowledge management content
  • Comfortable working with a team as well as independently under minimal direction
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Superior maturity, professionalism, and judgment
  • Strong ownership, accountability, and attention to detail in all work efforts; ability to successfully manage many simultaneous work items of changing priority
  • AV installation, Crestron programming, or touch screen GUI development experience
  • Ability to read complex construction and design drawings
  • Knowledge of Digital Signage solutions and IPTV systems
  • Project management skills

Certificates and Licenses

The following are preferred:
  • CTS certification
  • CTS-D or CTS-I certification
  • Biamp Tesira Server certification
  • Crestron Technician or Design certification
  • Dante Level I, II or III

Working Conditions

  • Support outside of regularly scheduled hours, including weekends, will occasionally be required
  • Must be accessible by personal cell phone during business hours, and occasionally off-hours; phone stipend will be provided
  • Ability to perform physical tasks that include climbing ladders, lifting up to 30 lbs., and climbing stairs
