Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Implement all audio, sound, and audio/video monitor aspects of theater, dance, music, opera, and other events in the BCB Mainstage inclusive of installation and strike. Mix musicals and music events. Work with guest sound designers to realize their designs. Act as A1 for BCB Mainstage events when necessary. Supervise the staffA1/Audio Engineer in their duties. Train student workers and production technicians to assist in engineering responsibilities. Regularly interface with the Producer to ensure that budgetary and deadline needs are addressed in a timely manner. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Act as A1 for musical theater, music, theater, dance concerts, dance juries and opera events in the BCB Mainstage as necessary. 

• Meet with directors, choreographers, music directors, conductors and guest designers to determine sound, audio, and monitor requirements for each production. 

• Meet with production staff to collaborate on needs of each production and the effective process for installation of sound equipment including audio and video monitors.

• Oversee the installation of audio equipment necessary for each production.

• Maintain the 31 Hemenway distributed program feed, assistive listening system, and page system.

• Manage video monitor elements and Clear-Com system for productions, including transferring equipment between the booth and tech table positions for technical rehearsals. Elements may include conductor cameras, audio monitors, video monitors, headsets, etc.

• Create sound files and effects, edit music and projections, and facilitate playback for BCB Mainstage events. Create QLab files for audio and projections playback.

• Establish and maintain audio feed to the video camera for archival and streaming purposes.

• Ensure that proper safety measures and adequate housekeeping are observed by all under their direction. Enforce all applicable EPA, USITT, and OSHA standards in the workplace. Adhere to Boston Fire Department codes.

• Purchase/rent equipment as needed while working within established budgets. Maintain audio equipment inventory including the BCB Mainstage backline and A2 inventory. 

• Maintain wireless microphone inventory, including performing RF reconciliation and deployment. Must follow all applicable FCC regulations. 

• Coordinate the installation and strike of backline equipment and orchestra pit microphones as consistent with the orchestra pit plot.

• Assist with select projects in the Zack Box, Houston Hall, Seully Hall, or other BCB performance spaces as time allows.

• Supervise and train the A1/Audio Engineer and A2/Assistant Audio Engineer in their duties.

• Train student workers, production technicians, and show crew in execution of audio and sound duties. Assign student workers or production technicians to cover events as appropriate.

• Record voice over as necessary.

• Maintain housekeeping and basic repairs of the BCB Mainstage audio equipment and control booth.

• Recommend capital expenditures and improvements.

• Perform other duties that enhance institutional professionalism and/or academic needs as requested.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

At least 5 years experience as Sound Engineer for theater, dance, and/or opera productions.Additional requirements: Exceptional engineering skills for musicals, prior work with digital consoles, mixing wireless mics in live performances, installation of visual/audio monitors and other audio equipment including Clear-Com.

- Experience with QLab, Dante Systems, Audio Architect, and other audio software. 

- Experience with basic wiring and basic repair of equipment preferred. 

- Prior work with students or volunteers in theater or a performing arts environment is preferred. 

- BA in Theater or other degree equivalent preferred. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises staff A1/Audio Engineer, A2/Assistant Audio Engineer, Production Technicians, student workers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

BCB Mainstage, control booth, office space, Zack Box and other venues as requested.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC. (Responsible for on-call, 24 HR. coverage, etc.):

Nights and weekends required. On call during production cycles when not on site. Must be able to lift objects of up to 40lbs and climb ladders up to 24 feet.
