The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, care and treatment of injuries to athletes using necessary knowledge of injury patterns and modern principle of athletic training. Collection of samples for drug testing. Supervision and education of student athletic trainers. Position details: Employees Supervised - 30+ student athletic trainers and interns

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in specialized curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program.

  • One year full-time or 2 years of part-time experience, paid or voluntary, as a student athletic trainer.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must be certified by the Board of Certification of the National Athletic Trainers Association.

  • Ability to sit for State of Texas License to practice athletic training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays to complete assigned tasks.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree.

  • Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification.

  • CPR certification.

  • AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) Certification.

  • Drug testing knowledge.

  • Psychology training.

Responsibilities

  • TREATMENT/REHAB - Evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to TAMU athletes. Taping, bracing, and preparation of student athletes for practices and games (events) of assigned sports.  

  • ATHLETE CARE - Coordinate with Director of Sports Nutrition for appropriate meals and supplements utilized by student athletes. Charting and record keeping of student athlete injuries utilizing current record keeping systems and protocols. Coordination and consultation with physicians, student athletes, and medical facilities regarding health care. Consultation with coaches and parents regarding student athlete health care. 

  • ATHLETE CARE - Attendance and supervision for safety and preventative emergency care of student athletes at practice and games (events) of assigned sports. Travel, as directed and required, with assigned teams.

  • SUPERVISION - Assist in supervision of student athletic trainer apprenticeship and education and sport scheduling.

  • LICENSES - Literature review and continuing education sufficient to maintain professional licenses and certifications.

  • SUPERVISION - Assist in maintenance and supervision of athletic training room, equipment, and supply inventory.

  • RULES - Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations. Establishes and ensures communication and enforcement of riles and regulations concerning student athlete conduct, appearance, road games, punctuality, and other areas deemed appropriate.

  • DRUG TESTING - Collection of urine samples for drug testing. Performs other duties as assigned.
