Athena Post-Baccalaureate Fellow, Applied Learning

Job Summary:

The Post Baccalaureate Fellowship at the Athena Center for Leadership, on the Applied Learning team, is a one-year opportunity (with the possibility of renewal) for a graduating Barnard or Columbia senior or a recent Barnard graduate. This full-time role comes with a stipend of $45,000 per annum, paid holidays, and vacation days. The desired start date for this role is August 1, 2024.

Job Description:

The Athena Applied Learning Fellow will assist with various layers of Center programming and operations, working specifically to support Athena’s student-facing communities of practice. Reporting to the Program Manager, Applied Learning, the Athena Applied Learning Fellow will support the successful launch and execution of various communities serving Barnard students. The Fellow will also gain firsthand experience facilitating and leading these communities. As a full-time member of the Athena Center staff, the Fellow will be expected to attend Center staff meetings, Barnard all-staff meetings, participate in Athena Center events, and support other Athena Center events/operations as needed.

This Fellowship is a unique and valuable opportunity for students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in human-centered design, psychology, sociology, higher education administration, or similar fields. By the end of the Fellowship, the Fellow will have gained meaningful experience in designing, facilitating, and evaluating communities of practice as a methodology for learning and community engagement. Additionally, the Fellow will lead a research-informed assessment about Athena program alumni. 

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Athena’s Director of Applied Learning and Program Manager, Applied Learning in the administration, programming, and facilitation of Applied Learning programming, specifically, Athena's communities of practice

  • Explore, develop, and implement creative strategies to grow and deepen student engagement, including: 

    • proposing new events or opportunities for Barnard students to connect with Athena’s staff and resources;

    • documenting the community of practice events via photos; 

    • curating community of practice-related content for Athena's general newsletter;

    • supporting the design and facilitation of at least one community of practice per semester;

    • liaising with student leads (i.e, interns);

  • Support the development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation, and learning plans for all communities of practice and other programs;

  • Write and edit thoughtful, compelling content, ranging from pieces on learning/outcomes of our programs and the ongoing work of our students;   

  • Availability to work some evenings to support communities of practice.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate is passionate about designing learning communities and creating spaces for connections between people and ideas to flourish and thrives in a fast-paced environment. S/he/they will be highly creative, a thoughtful communicator, and someone that is comfortable representing Athena in various mediums. The selected candidate will demonstrate a sense of ownership - interest in driving projects from ideation to execution - but will also be responsive to feedback.

Strong writing skills, comfort with public-speaking, and familiarity with social media are essential.

This is a full-time position that offers a flexible schedule; evening coverage is required on 2-3 days a week to support select communities of practice.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $45,000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
