Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is searching for an experienced leader and established researcher to serve as Associate Division Chief for the Assured Software and Information Division (ASID) of the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER). ASID is a new unit focusing on developing and implementing analytical methods to assure the security and integrity of data, software, algorithms, and cyber-connected devices. Research areas of interest include: AI/ML, information theory, quantitative reasoning, programming language and compiler theory, formalisms, combinatorics, formal methods, abstract interpretation, symbolic analysis, static and dynamic analysis, malware analysis, fuzzing, natural language processing, and other fundamental mathematical-based knowledge applied to diverse cyber problems.

The CIPHER Lab has programs across a wide range of cybersecurity topics, including secure information systems, cyber-physical systems, reverse engineering, software and hardware assurance, trusted microelectronics, command and control systems, cyber threat analysis, and novel computing and information storage approaches including quantum and molecular systems. The goal of ASID is to grow a forward-looking capability in quantitative methods that brings innovative cross-disciplinary methods and techniques to the laboratory’s diverse cyber research portfolio. Current efforts include projects in adversarial machine learning, software assurance, cyber-physical system reverse engineering, cyber system resilience, and natural language processing applied to cybersecurity. Researchers in the division often develop solutions in collaboration with Georgia Tech faculty and students as well as research groups in academia, industry, and government from around the globe.

ASID currently consists of 20 full time researchers and is expected to grow substantially. The ability to operate with an entrepreneurial spirit combined with the stability of funded programs of nationally relevant purpose makes GTRI a unique and rewarding place to work. Researchers at GTRI are research faculty at Georgia Tech.

The Associate Division Chief assists the Division Chief in all aspects of the direction and operation of the Division. The Associate Division Chief is primarily responsible for the ongoing operations of the Division (oversight of budgets, projects, and resources) and is expected to maintain an active research portfolio. The Associate Division Chief also provides oversight for the administrative functions of the Division, personnel matters within the Division, compliance to policies and procedures, and is responsible for the Division interface to major GTRI support units, including Research Security, Accounting and Finance, Talent Management, and Sponsored Project Support. 


Job Duties

 Management duties include:

  • Oversight of division program and operational activities,
  • Contract development activities for the division and interfacing with sponsors,
  • Personnel management including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.,
  • Management of budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures,
  • Development of research collaborations with other GTRI laboratories, Georgia Tech academic faculty, and outside organizations,
  • Develops operational plans and other Division-level plans and documents,
  • Oversees Division facilities, including facilities improvements decisions, space usage decisions, and overhead budgets, and
  • Contributes to recruiting strategies, hiring decisions, and assists with the hiring process.

Research duties include:

  • Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
  • Program management of specific research projects,
  • Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting ASID's strategic vision, and
  • Development of proposals for new research efforts.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • 9+ years of experience after the B.S. degree and a M.S. or Ph.D. in a related field
  • Significant experience in:

         -Research and development, strategic planning, sponsor engagement, program management, and personnel management in a                  related field,

         -program development, proposal generation, and sponsor engagement, and

         -leading research projects and managing researchers

  • Demonstrated technical achievements in the relevant technical domains
  • Excellent communication skills 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Management experience for medium-sized research group strongly preferred

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
