Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Development, the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students works closely with the VCSD to provide administrative direction for student development services and programs. The assistant vice chancellor and dean of students provides visionary and strategic leadership that identifies and addresses student concerns and crises, offers comprehensive support for students, and promotes overall student growth, development, well-being, safety, and ongoing success. This position oversees the intervention and management of students of concern cases, serves as the Civil Rights and Title IX coordinator for the university, coordinates the Student Success Coach program, oversees EdSights as it relates to student engagement and retention efforts, coordinates the university’s emergency aid program, and serves as a student advocate. In addition, the assistant vice chancellor and dean of students will support collaboration among student development offices related to the creation and implementation of well-being initiatives grounded in the division’s seven dimensions of well-being. The assistant vice chancellor and dean of students will serve on the VCSD’s leadership team and work collaboratively with the directors to support the division’s student success and student engagement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling, social work or related field and minimum of six years of relevant experience in student affairs and higher education administration including some prior management experience; or equivalent education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge and experience of best practices for behavioral intervention, risk management and case management to provide appropriate responses and resources to students reporting challenges with mental health (including suicidal ideation), chronic health issues, substance abuse, or other social and emotional issues affecting their educational success. Demonstrated experience chairing behavioral intervention and Care teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal issues, current trends, and best practices that inform student case management in higher education and Title IX.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, human relations, organizational, and time-management skills, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated experience responding to student crises and complex conduct situations; managing sensitive and confidential information/records; understanding and appreciation for college student development, student success constructs, and the student affairs field in general.
  • Outstanding communication skills including the ability to impart complex information with clarity to a range of constituencies (faculty, students, administrators, parents, law enforcement, etc.) as well as to media outlets.
  • High level of intercultural competence, including experience working with diverse communities, such as students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, international students, and other under-represented student populations.
  • Proven capacity to cultivate trust and credibility with students, staff and faculty and to build positive and effective relationships with student leaders and colleagues across the university.


Job Duties


Job Duty
Administrative 
  • Assist the vice chancellor for student development with the professional and leadership development of the division, including the development of strategic direction, annual goals and objectives, assessment, professional and personal development trainings, and retreats.
  • Provide vision for sustaining a culture of prevention and care on campus for students facing social and emotional challenges impacting their academic success.
  • Provide opportunities for collaboration among student development offices in order to create programs and services geared toward the advancement of student development’s seven dimensions of well-being.
  • Serves as a student conduct hearing officer or appellate officer as needed for cases that are not alleged Title IX or sexual misconduct violations.
  • Ensure the university is in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Regulations.
  • Serve in the absence of the Vice Chancellor for Student Development.
  • Serve as a member of the VCSD leadership team and partner with other colleagues to address emerging issues, provide leadership to new initiatives, and achieve the goals of Student Development.
  • Serve in interim student development positions, prepare statistical reports, coordinate the preparation of annual reports and analysis, and coordinates special research projects, including data gathering, and report development.

Student Support 
  • Serve as the Title IX Coordinator and manage the university’s compliance activities and responsibilities under Title IX. Perform intake and initial assessment of reports of sexual misconduct by USCB students, faculty, and staff. Share information with survivors about supportive measures, including psychological and academic support. Coordinate the investigation and disciplinary process as outlined by university policy. Develop and implement comprehensive and legally compliant Title IX training programs. Work with Institutional Research and other partners, implement periodic sexual assault climate surveys.
  • Build relationships with campus partners in identifying and responding to students of concern and manage the institution-wide Students of Concern team.
  • Serve as point of contact for crises and student emergencies, and the development, implementation, and oversight of protocol of emergency services for students.
  • Manage and oversee EdSights as it relates to student engagement and retention efforts. Utilize data-driven insights to enhance student success initiatives.
  • Coordinate and oversee the Student Success Coach program ensuring effective mentorship and support for student success. Duties include volunteer recruitment, assignments, on-going professional development, and identification through EdSights and other means of individuals and groups of students who need additional support.
  • Advocate on behalf of students and foster collaborative relationships among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Support students engaging in the medical leave process, students who need absence verification for extended time away from the university, or students seeking to withdraw from the university.
  • Manage the Emergency Grant Fund application and distribution process to provide timely assistance to students facing financial challenges.
  • Coordinate food pantry operations including donations and marketing.
