Summary

The University of Michigan's Cardiac Surgery Department is among the premier cardiac surgical programs of its kind in the nation and only one of three to be structured as a stand-alone department. The department is organizationally structured into four sections: adult cardiac, pediatric cardiac, clinical and health services research, and basic and translational science. The department is one of very few cardiac surgical programs in the nation to have a T32 training program, and has nearly $4M in annual federal funding and over 50 active clinical trials. The existing faculty within the Section of Health Services Research and Quality (HSRQ) have four R01s and one K award. The department is seeking to expand its footprint and leverage this established track record and success by recruiting a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in the areas of patient safety, quality improvement, mixed methods research and/or implementation science. 


Responsibilities*

Qualified candidates would develop and maintain their own research agenda, as well as contribute to inter-disciplinary research resulting in publications and extramural support, as well as present results at appropriate scientific meetings.  Duties also include teaching and mentorship to a variety of learners, including medical students, residents, and fellows.


Required Qualifications*

Candidates must have an MD or PhD (or equivalent), strong academic credentials and a research portfolio that demonstrates their potential for achieving national leadership in their area of expertise.  Candidates with experience and/or expertise focusing on patient safety, quality improvement, mixed methods research and/or implementation science will be highly preferred. Other qualifications that will be considered in the selection of the candidates will include a record of success in multi--disciplinary research environments and extramural research support. Evidence of competence in didactic teaching and mentorship is expected.

Additional Information

The holder of this faculty position will: (1) have a primary appointment in the Department of Cardiac Surgery, with a strong potential for joint or adjunct appointments; (2) work and collaborate with other faculty members and staff at the University of Michigan'?s Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI ) at the University of Michigan's North Campus Research Complex; and (3) work and partner with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan physician-led Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI ) programs. This infrastructure presents a unique and ideal laboratory for advancing the holder of this faculty position, as well as healthcare quality and safety more broadly.
