Position Description:

The University of Iowa School of Music seeks an Assistant Professor to complement the Composition-Theory Area, beginning in the fall of 2024. The Composition-Theory Area administers all theory curricula from the BA to PhD levels and oversees the School’s thriving Center for New Music and renowned electronic music studios. Current faculty members have expertise in Austrian music theory, electronic instruments, empirical musicology, environmental soundscapes, Georgian chant, live sampling and remixing, making instruments, music cognition, music theory pedagogy, musical poetics, and popular music. The School of Music provides conservatory-like instruction at a Big 10 research institution, offering graduate and/or undergraduate degrees in composition, conducting, jazz studies, music education, music theory, music therapy, musicology, and performance. The School enrolls approximately 450 majors and has more than 50 full-time faculty members. It is situated in Voxman Music Building, a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Iowa City.

Responsibilities:



  • Produce creative work and/or scholarship leading toward a national reputation or greater

  • Advise graduate theses and dissertations

  • Help to recruit promising graduate students

  • Teach classes that may include musicianship and theory, introduction to composition, applied composition, orchestration, analysis, and special topics related to the candidate’s areas of expertise

  • Supervise teaching assistants

  • Engage in service to the School, the University, and the profession

  • Collaborate within and outside the Area to develop the curriculum, courses, and other initiatives

  • Where applicable, contribute to university-wide efforts to connect classroom work to multiple career settings, entrepreneurial initiatives, and broader social challenges

Education Requirement:

Doctorate in music in hand by the start date (August 21, 2024)

Required Qualifications:

  • Evidence of quality creative work and/or research

  • Two years of full-time experience (or the equivalent) teaching composition and/or music theory full-time at the college level as an instructor of record

  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, and written and oral communication skills

  • Evidence of passion for advancing pedagogy and facilitating student learning

  • Demonstrated teamwork and collegiality

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Evidence of strong keyboard facility

  • Experience working with relevant teaching technology

  • Experience promoting an inclusive culture in the academic environment
