Assistant Manager, Laboratory Animal Resource Center

The Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the efficient and effective operation of an animal facility, ensuring the welfare of research animals, and assisting in the management of day-to-day operations. This role involves collaboration with researchers, animal care staff, and facility management to maintain high standards of animal care, compliance with regulations, and overall facility organization.

 

What you'll do in this position: 

  • Ensure the proper care and welfare of research animals in accordance with established protocols, regulations, and ethical standards. 
  • Oversee daily husbandry activities, including feeding, watering, cage cleaning, and health monitoring.
  • Monitor and maintain facility conditions, including temperature, humidity, and sanitation, to ensure a safe and compliant environment. 
  • Coordinate the scheduling of tasks and staff to ensure 24/7 coverage, including weekends and holidays. 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory agencies, such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and maintain accurate records of animal care activities.
  • Train and supervise vivarium staff in proper animal care techniques, facility protocols, and safety procedures. 
  • Stay informed about industry best practices and technological advancements to enhance vivarium operations.

 

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU 
  • Bachelors of Science degree or Vet Tech Degree/License and 1 year of laboratory animal science experience OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience

Preferred

  • Bachelors of Science degree or Vet Tech Degree/License
  • 2+ years of laboratory animal science experience 
  • AALAS certification (LAT or LATG)

Environment: Rare presence of abnormal variations in temperature and exposure to outside conditions
Physical Exam Required: Y
Physical Exam Details: Moderate physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Examples include: 

  • Relocate a 50 lb. bag of feed, 5 minutes in intervals throughout the day; Several times of day, 5 days per week; Gloves, Gown, Mask, paper mask or N95
  • Cleaning equipment can be heavy (excess of 100 lb.) but is on casters; Pushing and maneuvering only, 5 minutes, in intervals throughout the day; 3-4 times per day, 5 days per week; Gloves, Gown, Mask, paper mask or N95

Approximate Starting Salary: $61,500 - $80,000, depending on qualifications
