Director for Educational Program Assessment and Quality Improvement
USC School of Medicine Columbia (SOMC)
The Director for Educational Program Assessment and Quality Improvement (QI) is a faculty member who oversees overall educational assessment processes and procedures for the SOMC medical student programs and graduate programs as well as serving as the primary point of contact for continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. This includes coordination and performing essential tasks related to accrediting bodies such as the LCME and SACS. In addition, the director is responsible for the preparation of an annual Program Assessment and CQI Report for the medical student programs, a key resource to inform administration, faculty and staff of educational program outcomes and opportunities for improvement and an essential part of our LCME accreditation preparedness.
Reports to: This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The director also works closely with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.
Direct reports: The director supervises and is supported by two evaluation coordinators.
Specific duties/responsibilities associated with this position include:

  • Oversees the Office of Educational Program Assessment and Quality Improvement in the SOMC, including direct oversight of the staff working within the office.
  • Develops educational program assessment for the MD program in collaboration with the course and clerkship directors and the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • Oversees the CQI process as it pertains to the educational programs. Constructs CQI parameters in collaboration with the Curriculum Committee and the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • Prepares the annual Program Assessment and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Report. This comprehensive report outlines areas of compliance with LCME accreditation standards and also identifies areas of concern requiring further follow-up actions by SOMC administration, faculty and staff. This report utilizes factual reports from student outcomes, student survey data, and analysis of trends to highlight areas of needed focus for future improvement areas.
  • Supported by office coordinators, provides assistance to curriculum leaders in medical student programs and graduate programs with collection and assessment of faculty teaching evaluations by students. This data is widely utilized throughout SOMC for program assessment, evaluation of faculty members, preparation of dossiers for promotion and/or granting of tenure, and continuous improvement of the curriculum.
  • Assists with preparation of LCME accreditation documents, including annual LCME follow-up reports. Assists with the preparation of LCME self-study documents during reaccreditation cycles.
  • Assists graduate programs (Biomedical Science, Physician Assistant, Genetic Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Nurse Anesthesia) with program assessment services, as requested.
  • Provides consultation to biomedical science, pre­-clerkship and clinical curriculum leaders regarding assessment strategies and tools.
  • Serves as the SOMC liaison for the Office of Assessment, Research, and Analytics Committee. Prepares academic program assessment for the MD program for the Provosts’ Office.
  • Assists educational deans and the associate dean for academic affairs in comparing educational outcomes at branch campuses with those at the primary Columbia campus.
  • Serves on the Strategic Planning Committee
  • Serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Curriculum Committee
  • Serves on other SOMC or USC committees as appropriate opportunities arise.

Required Education and Experience
  • Applicants should have a Masters or Doctorate with preferred experience in program assessment and quality improvement.
  • Experience with educational accreditation bodies in a health care field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and database software packages.
  • Able to produce reports as required.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing with faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with educational accreditation bodies in a health care field is preferred.
  • Experience in program assessment and quality improvement.
