Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and the Department of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) seek to recruit an internationally recognized physician-scientist to serve as Division Chief for Hematology-Oncology and Director of the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute (CBDI) at CHLA.

The Cancer and Blood Disease Institute at CHLA is the largest and top-ranked pediatric hematology-oncology program in the Western U.S. In 2023, U.S. News & World Report ranked the CBDI No. 3 in the nation and the No. 1 pediatric hematology-oncology program in California and the Pacific region. CHLA has been affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC since 1932, and the CBDI is the pediatric component of the National Cancer Institute-designated USC-Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As Director of the CBDI, the position will report jointly to the President/Chief Executive Officer and the Pediatrician-in-Chief at CHLA. As Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology, the position will report to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics of the USC Keck School of Medicine. The position includes membership at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and an academic appointment through USC Keck School of Medicine at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, appropriate to training and experience.

The annual base salary range for this position is $116,505-$517,500.  When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

The Chief/Director will oversee the research, treatment, prevention, and education programs in pediatric hematology, oncology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation/cellular therapy. They will be expected to conduct research and further advance a leading research program that integrates laboratory and clinical science to develop and deliver innovative therapies. The Division currently consists of 60 faculty within four Sections: Hematology, Oncology, Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, and Basic and Translational Research. The program provides multidisciplinary, individualized care to approximately 2,500 new patients each year and conducts over 37,500 outpatient visits annually. Faculty investigators conduct extensive bench-to-bedside research. Research funding in FY23 totaled $52.5 million with $8.3 million in new awards. The Division has a large clinical trials operation that supports programs in hematology, oncology, and transplantation/cellular therapy with over 620 enrollments on 250 clinical trials in FY23. Two leading, international pediatric oncology clinical trials consortia are headquartered within the CBDI: Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia/Lymphoma (TACL) and New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy (NANT). The CBDI is a leading participant of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and a member of the Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN) and 20 additional international consortia. The Division hosts an ACGME-accredited pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship training program and 1-year advanced subspecialty fellowships in Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Oncology, Neuro-Oncology, Transplantation/Cellular Therapy, and Coagulation.
