Position Overview

The University of Kansas is seeking an Associate Vice Provost of HR Partnerships to 1) support the implementation and continuous improvement of the HR Partner model at KU, 2) provide ongoing leadership to, and ensure alignment among, the distributed HR Partners, and 3) provide strategies and approaches for the nurturing and development of the network of HR Partners.  

This position will have a critical role in working with unit leaders to collaboratively recruit, hire, and support HR Partners and ensure consistent levels of HR knowledge, expertise, and service across the University. Additionally, the AVP of HR Partnerships leads the design and development of the emerging HR Partner Academy and continued mentorship and training programs for the success of the HR Partners and the resources they provide.

This position provides central oversight and management of the distributed network of HR Partners. The AVP of HR Partnerships must have strengths in relationship building and management, strong communication and information sharing skills, experience being a collaborative partner, and have a consistent understanding and application of all HR policies, procedures, and practices across the network of HR Partners.  The successful incumbent must also stay abreast of leading edge HR trends, compliance and regulatory changes being a key partner to ensure that HR Partners are informed and able to leverage technology successfully for efficiency purposes as appropriate.


Job Description

1.  HR Partner Model Implementation and Continuous Improvement (30%) 

  • Supports the CHRO in developing and delivering consistent HR policies and programs.
  • Continuously monitors the evolution of the HR Partners and develop evolving practices, processes, and resources that support their long-term success.
  • Promotes conversations and solicit feedback from Deans and other University leaders about the role of HR Partners.
  • Partners with unit leaders in selecting and hiring HR Partners.
  • Develops relationships and establishes trust with university leaders to help promote successful working relationships with their HR Partners.
  • Helps unit leaders and HR Partners make informed decisions regarding technologies and processes that are consistent with other units across the university.  
  • Implements an HR Partner Academy for all HR Partners that provides clear role expectations and standards, and training related to being a successful HR Partner.
  • Leverages KPIs to measure and demonstrate the value of the PeopleFirst model to the university.
  • Serves as a sounding board for HR Partners on a wide range of strategic and consultative HR issues and initiatives. 
  • Champions the HR Partner model.
  • Develops HR strategies and programs as part of the Senior HR Leadership Team by using employee feedback and knowledge gathered at the unit levels.
  • Regularly solicits and collects trends on challenges and opportunities from HR Partners and unit leadership.
  • Provides employee trends and issue analysis to HR and University leaders by serving as a conduit of information between HR Partners and University leadership 

2.  Manage the HR Partners (30%) 

  • Serves as the HR manager/ for all HR Partners in close partnership with unit leader manager/supervisor.
  • Develops performance goals and expectations for each HR Partner.
  • Regularly meets with HR Partners and evaluates their progress in alignment with performance and development goals and expectations.
  • Partners with unit leaders to evaluate performance and development opportunities for HR Partners.
  • Facilitates a positive, efficient, and effective partnership between HR Partners and the HR Centers of Excellence.

3.  Nurture and Develop HR Partners (30%) 

  • Monitors leading and best practices across higher education and other industries relative to HR Partner development. 
  • Works with HR Partners to address issues or concerns that are raised. 
  • Creates and facilitates a professional development plan for each HR Partner, inclusive of development opportunities for HR Partners to promote continuous growth and learning. 
  • Creates a cohesive network that supports connection, collaboration, and consistency among HR Partners, such as forums to share information and best practices. 
  • Identifies and develops a pipeline for potential future HR Partners at the University and create corresponding action plans that elevate the skills and competencies needed for them to serve as future HR Partners. 

4.  Other Duties as Assigned (10%)

  • Actively participates in professional development activities to promote learning and growth. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years of experience providing HR advice and counsel to leaders and employees in more than one of the following HR areas such as:  recruiting and hiring, compensation, employee relations, performance management, workforce and succession planning, organizational design, retention, employee engagement and culture, HR data analytics, etc.
  • 5+ years of executive-level managerial experience.
  • Direct work experience with, and knowledge of, federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Experience with various Human Resource systems and platforms, (e.g., Applicant Tracking Systems, HRIS, etc.)
  • Experience with conflict resolution and handling confidential matters.
  • Experience in program design and implementation including change management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong customer-service orientation and experience as demonstrated in work history and references.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Human Resource Management or similar disciplines.
  • Experience working in Higher Education environment.
  • HR Certification (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR)
  • Previous experience as an HR Business Partner or in a similar role.
