Position Overview
The Associate Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs oversees a portfolio of faculty growth and development, retention, performance, and engagement programs, committees, processes, and systems that span all colleges and schools at Marquette. Working closely with a broad group of stakeholders, this role oversees strategies impacting key aspects of the faculty experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Oversees faculty professional development programming. Identifies professional development needs of faculty and provides workshops, programs, mentoring, and other interventions to address needs. Develops and delivers professional development programs, and manages professional development vendors, and partners. Creates and facilitates an onboarding process for all new full-time faculty members. Leads a thoughtful orientation program designed to engage, inform, and inspire new faculty members about key aspects of their job, including teaching and learning resources; Jesuit mission and pedagogy; shared governance, diversity, inclusion, and belonging programs and services; community partnerships; employee benefits, etc. Seeks opportunities to increase new faculty members’ sense of belonging within our campus community. Coordinates with subject matter experts to present timely and relevant information to foster growth among faculty and administrators.
2. Administers faculty contracting, personnel records management, and advises/partners on faculty-related matters. Leads the process for issuing regular and participating faculty contracts. Works with the Office of General Counsel to ensure contract language remains updated and legally sound. Maintains faculty personnel records database and system. Ensures all faculty members have been appropriately credentialed and that related documentation is collected and stored in their personnel files and entered in the database. As the subject matter expert on faculty affairs, partners with Deans and other areas of the university (e.g., HR, OGC, Title IX) on faculty performance, contracting, employee relations matters, and other challenging and confidential situations.
3. Oversees the University Committee on Faculty Promotions and Tenure and administers Marquette’s promotions and tenure process. Chairs the University Committee on Faculty Promotions and Tenure and with them leads all aspects of the promotion and tenure process for both regular and participating faculty. Facilitates monthly meetings of the Committee, reviews and provides feedback related to proposed changes to department and college promotion criteria and guidelines, and reviews promotion and tenure dossiers of regular faculty. Facilitates annual updates to university promotion and tenure guidelines and trains dossier preparers on best practices.
4. Oversees the Participating Faculty Committee and facilitates work to improve the lived experience of Marquette’s non-tenure track faculty. Identifies cross-university strategic priorities and executes programs, processes, and activities for approximately 800 participating faculty members spanning all colleges and schools. Focus areas include professional and career development, engagement, and retention. Facilitates monthly meetings of the Participating Faculty Committee and works with them to enhance the participating faculty lived (employee) experience. Ensures other cross-campus representatives/functions are brought to the table for alignment and partnership. Manages the process for awarding annual participating faculty professional development and research funds, oversees an annual forum for participating faculty, and hosts social hours each semester.
5. Responsible for oversight of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Supervises the Center for Teaching and Learning director and works with the CTL director and staff to set and achieve near and longer-term goals. Meets regularly with the CTL director to help guide strategy, programming, and personal matters and to assist with any issues that arise.
6. Manages systems and processes for tracking faculty development. Oversees the “Faculty Success” database which tracks all faculty activities including those related to research, teaching, and service. Oversees and assigns user access with the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis. Creates policies and procedures to ensure data is secure and reporting at all levels is optimized. Facilitates monthly meetings for consistency in application and trouble shooting. Manages the vendor and contract. Responsible for upgrades and issue identification. Facilitates training and seeks opportunities to improve the user experience and explores future options for both the data and the system.
7. Administers faculty leaves, tenure buy-out, and other faculty-specific policies. Oversees the policies and processes associated with university sabbaticals and works with the Sabbatical Review Committee to review sabbatical plans and reports. Also oversees other academic or prestigious leaves for the university. Writes policies and executes processes to maintain the Sabbatical Handbook; and provides guidance to faculty and deans on leave-related matters. Manages the tenure buy-out policy and program. Creates policies that advance Marquette’s workforce strategies, stewards our resources, and cares for long-serving faculty members. Oversees the administration of the tenure buy- out program and provides communication/support resources to faculty members and other key stakeholders (e.g., budget, HR, etc.). Reports relevant data to provost/other university administrators to inform decisions.
8. Serves as strategic plan priority leader. Works with others to help implement key priorities of the strategic plan. Responsible for providing leadership and overall direction for multiple priorities of the strategic plan.
9. Creates and maintains effective faculty affairs communication channels. Maintains an up-to-date and effective website. Develops other communication tools (with the Office of University Relations) to optimize communication across the faculty population.
10. Oversees faculty retention and separation data. Tracks and collects separation data from faculty who leave the university. Works with the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis to compile and analyze data, write reports and present to the University Committee on Diversity and Inclusion.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires an earned doctorate or terminal degree. 
A minimum of 7 years of related experience.
Must be a current faculty member in an accredited higher education institution, tenured or tenurable at Marquette University.
Be a self-starter able to work independently.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to clearly communicate with multiple constituencies.
Be able to contribute within a team environment and support the Provost’s Office broader vision, goals, and initiatives.
Be a problem solver able to work through complex issues across university areas.
Have a deep working knowledge of the university and its various functions.
Have demonstrated successful leadership experience overseeing committees, projects, and direct reports.

Preference will go to an Individual who is a tenured, full professor.
Preference will also be given to individuals who are current active employees.
