Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), the Associate Vice President, Philanthropy for the University of Maryland, Baltimore Office of Philanthropy will manage, plan, and coordinate philanthropic programs for the Office of Philanthropy and the University. This position is an executive level administrative position that provides oversight, leadership, guidance, and management to various areas within the Office, including planned giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving. The Associate Vice President is responsible for establishing and meeting short term & long-term fundraising and financial goals, and for developing and implementing planned and major gift strategies. The Associate Vice President maintains a prospect portfolio and is charged with cultivating and soliciting principal, planned and major gifts, as appropriate.  The Associate Vice President proactively cooperates with senior leaders of schools and the University to support the overall mission of the University.

Primary Duties:

  • Provide leadership to support the University’s mission and strategic initiatives for all development activities.  Contribute to the advancement of the University’s agenda and strategic plan.
  • Oversee various areas within the Office of Philanthropy, including planned giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive major gift cultivation and solicitation strategy and plan. Develops relationships with a cadre of prospective donors and will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward these individuals. Directs and manages a portfolio of principal, planned and major gift prospects, in the range of $50,000 to $1 million-plus.
  • Ensures the provision of adequate, accurate, and timely data for strategic decision-making and operational leadership. Provides research and advice to the CPO regarding sensitive issues.
  • Facilitates development of liaisons and partnerships with internal and external institutions to advocate for the advancement of the University’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Serves as the liaison to the CPO in supporting senior management in addressing unanticipated challenges and opportunities.
  • Develops and implements procedures, processes, and disciplines fundamental to maintaining a solid and reliable control environment within a heavily decentralized environment.
  • Participates on and provides input to multiple University committees and advisory boards.
  • Monitors and responds to higher education and/or University’s competitor behavior and market trends.
  • Creates a cohesive diverse work team that works to collaboratively to achieve University goals and mission.  Oversees the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually reviews strengths and increase proficiencies of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  

Education: Bachelor’s degree.  Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Eleven (11) years of experience progressively building a background in planned, principal, and major gift and philanthropic endeavors with strategic and tactical planning functions with at least five (5) years of experience at a management/leadership level. Experience in an academic health system or an institution of higher education is preferred.

Supervisory: Six (6) years of direct supervision and management.

Other: 

  • Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Commission.
  • Serves at the pleasure of the Vice President, Philanthropy.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Understands the audience and is able to tailor oral and written communication for optimal understanding. Is experienced with public speaking and presenting to groups of all sizes. 
  • Excellent knowledge of best practices in not-for-profit fundraising, IRS regulations, CASE guidelines and financial business operations.
  • In depth knowledge of complex gift transactions, GAAP, and internal controls requirements.  Knowledge of state accounting, reporting, and funding process is desirable.
  • Ability to build teams and empower subordinates to get the job done while providing the support they need.  Must have a history of recruiting and developing exceptional people.
  • Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and processes of the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Possess excellent relationship building, communication, and influencing skills. Demonstrates the ability to interact comfortably, gaining credibility with a wide range of university stakeholders and constituents at all levels of seniority.
  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
  • Skill in consultation and change management.

Hiring Range: $257K-$286K (Commensurate with education and experience)
