Job Summary: The Associate Vice President for Global Health Initiatives, under the general supervision of the HSC COO/VP, is responsible for serving as the principal medical and public health advisor to the COO/VP as it relates to global health, regional and statewide identified health programs, emergency medical and public health mobilizations, and other assigned projects that do not have a clear resident manager or an academic home (school) or office within the HSC. 

The incumbent will direct division and departmental operations, initiatives, and activities of a collaborative nature as directed by the HSC COO/VP and work through HSC and TAMU Schools, CIOs as requested.  The incumbent will oversee other assigned business opportunities, or other major functional areas activities as required for program implementation, research, and collaborative projects.
 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
     

  • Ten years of experience in managing highly visible international, national, state-wide, or regional programs in Texas related to science, research, emergency operations, and clinical services, including some supervisory experience.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Doctorate or equivalent is required for the role, particularly since the position includes the supervision and development of clinical trials and other projects related to the supervision of projects related to human health.

  • 10 years of experience in the medical and educational activities, experience with major academic systems within Texas, and have experience with major human health projects (> 100 million dollars in value).  

  • The incumbent should also have a demonstrated leadership within academia at the professor level within the health sciences (or equivalent) for at least ten years of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience related to dealing with the complexities of life within an academic institution.

  • The incumbent needs to be cognizant in developing and managing federal, state and research budgets with demonstrated experience in building coalitions to deliver funding initiatives.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Responsibilities:

  • Directs divisional and departmental projects, programs, initiatives, and operations as directed by the COO/VP– Initial Programs will include fostering HSC’s efforts to revitalize Global Health activities in South Texas and in rural areas of Texas, and relevant Institutes and centers, and research of TAMUS and TAMU related to clinical trials and biomedical products, particularly those activities that are regionally focused in in South Texas related to Driscoll Hospitals and Renaissance Hospitals and the Global Institute for Hispanic Health.    
     

  • Assists the COO/VP in division administration. Advises the COO/VP on internal and external issues affecting the division operations. Serves as a member of the divisional leadership team.
     

  • Researches and identifies funding opportunities for division programs and initiatives.
     

  • Develops, administers, and advises COO/VP on the HSC annual budget process and provides guidance to division units. The incumbent will need to be available to explain HSC’s positions related to health programming in a public forum or hearing when required. 

  • Drafts and administers relevant HSC policies, regulations, and rules as needed to foster the Global Health initiative.
     

  • Directs and assesses continuous improvement efforts related to priority HSC health initiatives.
     

  • Leads the development and implementation of the Global Health initiative by establishing division goals and objectives.
     

  • Represents the COO/VP, as required internally and externally.
     

  • Assumes additional supervisory and management responsibilities when specifically delegated from VP HSC.

  • Collaborates with internal and external entities to facilitate Global Health initiatives and coordinates special projects as assigned by the COO/VP HSC.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
