Job Description
Position Purpose:

The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (AVP-AA) provides administrative management and leadership for the College’s Academic Affairs division to ensure the processes of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs are highly coordinated, efficient, and effective. Reporting to the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President provides professional-level administrative, consultative, and coordinative academic program leadership and management for faculty and staff in Academic Affairs to promote student access, persistence, retention, and completion. The Associate Vice President provides leadership to support the vision of Academic Affairs by leading and managing Academic Affairs, academic programming and evaluation, strategic scheduling and program optimization, human resources management, budget management, and overall Academic Affairs governance. The Associate Vice President provides leadership to the academic deans, faculty, and staff in Academic Affairs. The Associate Vice President is a member of the Academic and Student Affairs leadership team, provides leadership to the Academic Deans’ Council, and serves as the lead representative for college administration on the college’s Academic Affairs and Standards Council (AASC). The position holder is also responsible for working with other college personnel to provide college-wide leadership and strategic planning and initiatives in achieving the college’s strategic priorities. This includes participating on college and system committees and task forces and leading college initiatives, as well as engagement with other educational institutions, community organizations, legislative governing bodies, business and industries, and other external stakeholders to meet the college mission.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and management of Academic Affairs.
  • Provide leadership for academic programming and evaluation.
  • Provide leadership to strategic scheduling and program optimization in Academic Affairs. Provide leadership, supervision, and work direction for Academic Affairs deans, faculty, and staff in Academic Affairs.
  • Develop and manage Academic Affairs budgets.
  • Provide leadership to the overall governance, planning and decision-making process for Academic Affairs.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree. 
  • At least five years of higher education administrative experience or at least five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population and proven understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion as critical components of academic excellence and student success.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, i.e., verbal, listening, written, interpersonal, and public presentation.
  • Experience in the areas of leadership, planning, program development and assessment, staffing, budget management, and supervision. 
  • Record of data informed decision-making including experience in analyzing multiple datasets and resources of information to make recommendations and implement solutions.  
  • Experience with understanding broad strategic planning and the critical need for attention to detail with demonstrated abilities in effective critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making.

  • Terminal degree. 
  • Prior or current administrative experience within Minnesota State system of colleges and universities. 
  • Knowledge and commitment to fulfilling the mission of a community and technical college that is student centered. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of higher education accreditation, federal and state higher education laws and regulations, and student records. 
  • Record of leading innovation and organizational change as it relates to curriculum, programs, and student services. 
  • Experience being able to apply strategic thinking and strong execution skills across various forms of education styles.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining partnerships and relationships across various stakeholder groups. 
  • Experience being able to delegate, collaborate, and promote consensus in accomplishing the college’s strategic plan. 
  • Experience being able to create trust, teamwork, cooperation, and cohesion among faculty, staff, and administrators. 
  • Evidence of ability to deal with demanding and high stress situations, multiple priorities, and varied situations simultaneously. 
  • Experience working in a unionized college or university setting.
