POSITION SUMMARY

THIS JOB IS LOCATED AT EGLIN, AFB FLORIDA. Seeking to hire an entry-level to mid-level Testing Engineer for the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate Fuze Branch’s (AFRL/RWMF) Advanced Initiation Sciences (AIS) Team to support Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) of initiation systems (including energetic materials and components). This position will require significant hands-on bench level engineering activities in support of senior and mid-level engineers and scientists in the planning and execution of research. Will continuously interact with multidiscipline applied research teams to design, document, analyze, conduct, and interpret test results. Identifies functional problems and suggests resolutions within test teams and dynamic work environments. Assists in the definition of internal quality control standards. Analyzes test cases and provides regular progress reports. Requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar with 0-7 years of experience in the field or in a related area. The applicant will employ a wide range of engineering principles from multiple fields. Working knowledge of mechanical engineering design, mechanics, and material science concepts is required. Basic knowledge of electrical engineering and optics disciplines is highly desirable. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Position requires the individual to be or be willing to become proficient in the safe conduct of hazardous operations which will include chemicals, high power lasers, high voltage and energetic materials. Reports to a supervisor for organizational responsibilities and technical leads for research and technology tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for P1:
BS in an engineering or related physical science field.
Familiar with a broad range of engineering principles, including mechanical and/or electrical engineering, optics, chemistry, physical, and mechanical property testing.
Basic knowledge of data acquisition using instruments such as oscilloscopes.
Basic knowledge of measuring techniques using instruments such as calipers, depth gauges, etc.
Working knowledge of mechanical engineering design, mechanics, and material science concepts. Basic knowledge of electrical engineering, optics and data acquisition.
Working knowledge of solid modeling design tools with a willingness to become a proficient user (SolidWorks preferred).
Proficient with MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
Proficiency with engineering computational tools such as but not limited to MathCad, Matlab or Labview.
Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.
Candidate must be able to obtain a SECRET level security clearance.

Minimum Qualifications for P2:

Minimum of 3 years related working experience.

Familiar with a broad range of engineering principles, including mechanical and/or electrical engineering, optics, chemistry, physical, and mechanical property testing.
Able to employ complex and frequently novel techniques to acquire necessary data, which routinely requires self-learning.
Must be capable of working in a laboratory environment, position requires knowledge of chemical safety practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Proficient with data acquisition tools such as oscilloscopes. Capable of analyzing and compiling test data into formats developed with the research staff which will include technical memoranda and reports.
Proficient with mechanical engineering design, mechanics, and material science concepts. Basic knowledge of electrical engineering, optics and data acquisition.
Proficient mechanical engineering designer of test equipment and fixtures.
Proficient knowledge of measuring techniques using instruments such as calipers, depth gauges, etc.
Proficient with solid modeling design tools (SolidWorks preferred). Ability to generate 3-D Cad models, assemblies, drawing packages, and bill of materials in an organized database.
Proficient with MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
Proficiency with engineering computational tools such as but not limited to MathCad, Matlab or Labview.

Position requires the individual to become proficient in the safe conduct of hazardous operations which will include chemicals, high power lasers, high voltage and energetic materials.
Performance of the duties of this position requires exceptionally diverse skills in a qualified, highly motivated individual. Strong critical thinking skills are required.
Knowledge of optical technologies such as lasers, fiber and open air optics, and imaging is desired.
Basic machining and tool skills. Responsible for the design, development and implementation of custom mechanical tooling/ fixtures for research and development activities.
Strong skills in problem solving, communication and product technology. Must communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a variety of people in numerous technical areas and all degrees of technical competence; and be able to function either individually or as an integral member of a dynamic team as circumstances dictate.
Ability to handle, package, and transport energetic materials to include: raw ingredients, composite formulations, and energetic materials residue resulting from testing of materials. Performs procedures associated with tracking energetic materials during preparation, test, and residue handling functions.
Must be able to actively participate in test planning, providing advice regarding test methods, safe conduct of operations, calibration, instrumentation, resolution, accuracy, risk and resource requirements; Drafts test plans and test schedules for review.
Understand product requirements and concepts to create detailed designs. Creation of drawings and work with machine shops to build prototypes. Create bill of materials, assembly instructions and drawings. Ability to assemble experimental hardware and debug/modify if necessary.
The incumbent will be required to lift items, fixtures, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds without the use of mechanical aides to perform duties.
