The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Scientist with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in the Department of Research.

The Associate Scientist supports the University’s research goals and objectives by performing laboratory experiments in his/her areas of interest, expertise, or assignment. Moreover, the incumbent performs various analytical procedures involving method development and application development and synthesis.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                                                   

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities including authorship of scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.

  • Publishes in refereed journals in collaboration with department leadership or independently.

  • Supervises research employees and non-exempt staff.

  • Writes extramural proposals with approval of senior managing staff.

  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.

  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.

  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researchers, supervisors, and other relevant staff.

  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).

  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Job Specifics

Participates as a member of research teams with clinical and basic researchers well as the residents, fellows, and research trainees in the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Department of Ophthalmology. Designs and executes statistical analyses of laboratory, animal, and clinical research data.  Advanced knowledge of R statistical software strongly preferred. Evaluates, interprets, and summarizes the results of statistical analyses. Assists in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including writing the statistical analysis sections and reviewing the Methods and Results sections. Assists in the preparation of abstracts and presentations for academic conferences. Documents and archives all programs and analyses. Evaluates the feasibility of research projects and assists researchers in all aspects of research planning and implementation including, but not limited to, sample size estimation and preparation of statistical analysis sections of IRB, IACUC, and human subjects/vertebrate animal sections of grant applications. Ensures that study designs are scientifically sound and results and conclusions are presented accurately and without bias. Supervises and mentors junior biostatisticians and other biostatistics staff members under the direction of the biostatistics manager. Produces randomization schedules, case-control selection, and identifies relevant variables to be documented. Supports research activities at the University and works under the direction of the biostatistics manager principal investigators. Participates in basic and applied research activities including co-authoring scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and/or patent applications in collaboration with other researchers.  Participates in the planning, implementation, and data analysis of IRIS Registry projects as a member of the BPEI IRIS Registry Analytic Center Consortium team. Learns and implements new biostatical analytic methods. This is a remote position within the United States.
