Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Research Computing Services, the Associate Research Systems Engineer will work with Columbia School of Social Work's (CSSW) Office of Computing and Instructional Technology (OCIT) leadership team to identify, implement and manage research computing services, including: research applications; research storage; secure data management; data repositories and archives; and collaboration approaches.  The CSSW IT Senior Systems Manager will provide on-site supervision and training.


Responsibilities

 Research computing strategy and support (35%):

  • Researches and reviews technology trends and participates in strategic technical planning activities.
  • Develops technical recommendations, drafting specifications and configuring new equipment and computing/data-management related services.
  • Working with OCIT, assist in placing service purchases for research projects.
  • Liaises and meets regularly with cross-campus research and technology groups.
  • Works with Research Computing Services/Columbia University IT on implementing centrally-managed research services.
  • Participates in the development process of new services as appropriate, including such areas as requirements, specifications, development, testing, and project management.

Desktop/laptop/software/communication/data management solution support (35%):

  • Provides end-user support to faculty, researchers, and staff for hardware, software, Internet, email, and printing issues.
  • Provides documentation and training to faculty, researchers, and administrators.
  • Asset management – keeps a detailed inventory and history of all equipment, software licenses, and maintenance contracts as well as records of technical and procedural documentation.
  • Procures institutional price quotes for computer hardware, printers, and software applications.

Secure data management (20%):

  • Serves as data security officer for projects involving sensitive/restricted data.
  • Ensures protocols and applications used to collect, store and transfer research data are in compliance with data security classification and Institutional Review Board requirements.
  • Oversees secured computers and secure data environments for the analysis of restricted use data.
  • Facilitates training and provides guidance to staff working on research projects regarding data security protocols.

Performs project specific duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested (10%):

All other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required
  • Minimum 2-4 years' related experience.
  • Experience supporting a Windows environment.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational and time management skills to support faculty, researchers, administrators and students.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to coordinate systems and support with existing Columbia University IT departments.
  • The ability to confer and consult with faculty, as well as research staff and students, on technical topics during various project meetings.
  • Experience with website development and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated competencies in the areas of teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting a Mac computing environment
  • Understanding of Group Policy management.
  • Experience with secure data sharing and collaborative solutions.
  • Experience using SSH and secure remote file transfer protocols (rsync, sFTP/scp, FTP, Globus).
  • Knowledge in networking, encryption, security, DNS, DHCP, NFS, CIFS, Samba, RAID, System Center and LDAP.
  • Knowledge of statistical and analytical software such as R, Stata, and SPSS.
  • Experience with social science research workflows and research computing environments.
  • Advanced understanding of multiple technical infrastructure roles and tools.
  • Project management skills.
