About the Opportunity
Summary
The Associate Research Scientist will be an active member of the Laboratory for the Modeling of Biological and Sociotechnical Systems (MOBS Lab) within the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University. The MOBS Lab focuses on research projects aimed at developing innovative mathematical models and computational tools to better characterize, understand, and anticipate large-scale complex networks and systems. The Lab is directed by Alessandro Vespignani and has joint affiliations with the Department of Physics in the College of Science, Bouve College of Health Sciences, and Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University.
Responsibilities
- Assist in initiating, executing, and completing research and simulations
- Prepare and write research papers, presentations, grant proposals, etc.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and collaborative environment
- Collaborate with the principal investigator and students across multiple academic and industry organizations
- Potential additional responsibilities include assisting in laboratory management, graduate student training/advising, and co-op student mentoring
Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent required. Must have extensive knowledge of physics, complex systems, network science, or related field. The candidate must have significant computational and applied statistical skills that can be applied to the modeling and forecasting the spread of infectious diseases. They must be able to handle, process, and analyze very large datasets of epidemic indicators, such as data from surveillance of cases, cellular phone, mobility patterns.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, attention to details, as well as training in research methodology and quantitative data analysis are essential to a successful candidate. Experience with writing proposals and project management experience are a plus. Ability to communicate and coordinate with multiple senior researchers from different fields; ability to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar.
