We are looking for an Associate Research Scientist to work at the interface between climate modeling and machine learning. The successful applicant will perform research as part of the multi-institution international project, M²LInES https://m2lines.github.io, supported by Schmidt Futures, which aims to further our understanding of climate processes and to reduce climate model biases, using scientific machine learning. The main goal of the work will be implementation, testing and further development of new machine-learning parameterizations for subgrid atmospheric processes (convection and turbulence) and observations-based nudging tendencies in the Community Earth System Model (CESM). Testing will be done in models of increasing complexity from single column model to prescribed sea surface temperature to fully coupled model. The successful applicant will work as part of the M²LInES atmospheric science team with Dr. Judith Berner at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Prof. Paul O'Gorman (MIT), and Pierre Gentine (Columbia University). The successful applicant is also expected to actively collaborate with other M²LInES team members, with scientists and engineers at NCAR, and with the Institute of Computing for Climate Science (ICCS). Examples of our research related to this project can be found at: https://m2lines.github.io/research/
