Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Associate Provost (AP) for Administration and Resource Management is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction in the management of resources within Academic Affairs, specifically, administration, finance and budget, personnel, and communications. This position reports directly to the Provost/Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and serves as an advisor on all matters related to the above. As a member of the Provost’s Cabinet, the AP participates in the planning, development, and implementation of the division’s priorities and activities and provides coordination and consultation to members of the Provost’s Cabinet to ensure divisional alignment. The AP leads teams of professionals that support the division in resource management (both fiscal and personnel), ensures effective operations in the Office of the Provost, and coordinates communication efforts among the University, the Office of the Provost, colleges, and other units within Academic Affairs.
With respect to operations, the AP is expected to provide oversight for Academic Affairs administrative operations (administration, finance and budget, personnel, and communications) and effectively collaborate with Provost’s Cabinet to create and implement Academic Affairs strategic initiatives, operational policies, and procedures. This includes leading and facilitating programmatic or infrastructure needs required by the division, providing support to leaders within Academic Affairs.
Regarding strategy, the AP is expected to facilitate and manage key strategic initiatives from start to finish, particularly those aligned with the university’s strategic plan. This includes providing oversight to ensure that necessary action plans and deliverables for key divisional projects are designed and completed effectively and timely.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • A post-baccalaureate degree in business administration (MBA), public administration (MPA), higher education management or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

  • Eight years of experience in business, financial, or administrative management.

  • Five years supervisory experience. 

  • Evidence of managing complex organizations; working collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies; promoting shared governance, and exhibiting excellent communication skills, sound judgment and decisive leadership to facilitate effective collaboration on complex projects. 

  • Demonstrated ability to set operational goals from strategic plans and lead direct reports to accomplish these strategic goals and initiatives. 

  • Strong analytic, research, and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand complex data and perform analysis swiftly and accurately.

  • Ability to maintain a high standard of confidentiality, discretion, and judgement.

  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

  • Ability to facilitate initiatives and processes that require convening various stakeholders, where responsible parties are not within the management span of the position, to build consensus, meet goals, and affect change.

  • Experience using data to develop and deploy resources to achieve goals and enact strategy.

  • Proficiency with business model construction, adaptation, and performance.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated success in building relationships with a wide range of constituencies across the University.

  • Experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina (UNC). The Division of Academic Affairs is the organizational unit at UNCW that houses the academic and administrative units charged with evolving, advancing, and operationalizing the core academic mission of the institution. Academic Affairs achieves this charge through a commitment to the principle of shared governance and collaboration with the other organizational divisions of UNCW: the Division of Business Affairs, the Division of Student Affairs, the Chancellor’s Division, and University Advancement.
Academic Affairs is the primary division responsible for delivering the teaching, research, and service mission. Through academic policies and practices consistent with sound research, theory, and methods, Academic Affairs provides a wide array of scholarly programs and leadership that embody excellence in teaching, learning, scholarship, and creative work, as well as service to local, regional and global communities consistent with the institution’s strategic objectives. As of January 2024, the division comprises five colleges, three major centers, and seven functional areas that support faculty, staff, and students. Academic Affairs represents approximately 75% of the university budget and about 62% of the university workforce. The Office of the Provost is the central administrative office responsible for the coordination and leadership of the division of Academic Affairs.
A key functional area within the Office of the Provost is “Administration and Resource Management". This unit provides support in areas related to budgeting, strategic planning, tactical operations across functional areas, communications, and other matters that allow the Office of the Provost to function at a high level.
