Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
As the University’s Chief Academic Officer, the Provost has broad responsibilities for advancing the education and research missions of the University. The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (OEVCP) provides the leadership for UNC-CH’s strategic planning for academic programs. The Provost’s organization ensures the development and enhancement of high quality baccalaureate, masters and doctoral-level programs through ongoing program review and assessment, the raising of academic standards, and the expansion of research and other scholarship/creative activity.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to serve and benefit society through its mission areas of research, teaching and service. In addition, Carolina’s academic and community engagement centers provide a multitude of opportunities for thousands of people from within the state of North Carolina and around the world to engage with the University and our campus community.
UNC-CH is seeking a visionary, strategic leader to serve as Associate Provost for Academic and Community Engagement (ACE) to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and outreach to the University and its broader community, and to lead its centers, institutes, museums, and other initiatives in support of the University’s strategic initiatives.
The Associate Provost for Academic and Community Engagement reports directly to the Executive Vice Provost and serves on the Provost’s Leadership Council. This person chairs and sits on multiple pan-university committees that guide the University’s educational strategy and outreach. The Associate Provost ensures that centers and institutes are operating in support of the University’s strategic plan and leads directors to manage their respective units consistent with UNC and System Policy. The Associate Provost works with centers and institutes to establish specific key performance metrics that align with the priorities of the University, and provides guidance on requests for authorization to plan, establish, or discontinue all university-wide centers and institutes.
The Associate Provost will promote and apply best practices regarding administration and operations management for all centers and institutes on campus. The Associate Provost also supports development and grant related activities and is a leader in public service and engagement with various campus and statewide stakeholders.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Leadership experience in higher education administration.
Experience working with faculty, staff and students in building and supporting research, education and public engagement programs.
Fundraising, development and stewardship experience.

The successful candidate will:

Enhance opportunities for cross-cutting collaboration across Carolina’s mission areas of research, teaching and service.
PhD or other terminal degree preferred.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
