The Associate Director for Education Abroad will report to the Emory College of Arts and Sciences’ Director of Education Abroad. Education Abroad is located in the ECAS Office for Undergraduate Education. Emory offers study abroad opportunities during the academic year and in the summer. We both work with partners abroad and organize study abroad programs led by Emory faculty. We are looking for an experienced Education Abroad leader who is able to take on staff supervision for Education Abroad advisors, and work with the Director and other staff on strategic planning for all types of programs. An awareness of risk management issues in international education is essential. We hope to find a leader with experience in outreach to diverse campus communities, and an ability to collaborate well, both within Education Abroad and with campus partners.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Directs the strategic planning, development, and implementation of program.
- Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.
- Represents the program in various national and international fora.
- Conducts research, designs new initiatives, writes publishable articles and papers, collaborates with others, and designs programs.
- May supervise staff.
- Performs other related duties as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
- The Associate Director reports to the Director of Education Abroad situated in the Office of Undergraduate Education and shares responsibility with the Director for creative planning in line with the College and University strategic initiatives, as well as for the development and guidance of the advising team.
- The Associate Director will co-lead a team of Education Abroad Advisors, who have responsibility for programming and processes related to our approved programs, including their knowledge of study abroad opportunities, the internal course equivalency and course approval processes, how to use study abroad courses to satisfy degree requirements, awareness and promotion of study abroad scholarship opportunities, and the delivery of pre-departure orientation and post-program re-entry programming.
- The Associate Director will advise for a portfolio of semester education abroad programs.
- In addition, the Associate Director will administer and advise for one or both Emory’s own semester education abroad programs, namely EDUCO (Paris) and Emory in Spain (Salamanca).
- Management of these programs does involve budget oversight and decision-making.
- The Associate Director must be able to develop strong relationships and implements programmatic goas in collaboration with key stakeholders, especially with faculty and other campus administrators, in order to explain and advocate for Education Abroad within the context of Emory academic policies and curriculum.
- For the sake of cross-training and a collaborative environment, the Associate Director will have the opportunity to advise for a small number of faculty-led summer programs.
- The Associate Director assists in overseeing risk management plan for study abroad programs and for developing programming on health, safety, and security for all students and faculty participating in study abroad.
- Coordinates with Counseling and Psychology Services, Global Safety and Security, Campus Life, and the Office of Accessibility Services on behalf of students abroad.
- Additional duties include, but are not limited to: shared responsibility for supporting various special events on campus, such as parent weekend, admissions events, first year student orientation, and graduation; incoming exchange students, and administrative responsibility for grade reporting. Willingness to undertake domestic and international travel as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in related field preferred.
- Five years working in an Education Abroad office with substantial experience advising students.
- Proven record of successful Interaction and collaboration with faculty and university staff.
- Demonstrated and excellent supervisory and program management abilities.
- Familiarity with program budgets.
- Proactive approach to work and ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as to work collaboratively with other team members.
- Adept problem-solve with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience studying, working, living in an intercultural environment (e.g. study abroad or working with multicultural populations and a commitment to promoting opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Education Abroad.
- Strong technology skills such as Slate and/or Terra Dotta.
- Second language experience preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in field related to specific program as indicated and five years program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Master's degree preferred.
