Position Summary

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health seeks to fill an Associate Program Director position. Under the supervision of the Director of the GATE (Gender, Adolescent Transitions, and Environment) program in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health, the Associate Program Director provides oversight and technical leadership for multiple program activities including the management of projects globally and in the USA, partnership building and fundraising, and research operations. GATE is an innovative research and practice program dedicated towards improving the lives of adolescents and women around the world. The individual hired for this position will bring a technical background and aptitude for managing people and must have demonstrated knowledge and interest in GATE’s technical areas of work, which include research and communication projects related to pubertal health transitions, menstrual health and hygiene, gender, and access to sanitation. The Associate Program Director will collaborate closely with the larger GATE team of staff and students in and outside the USA. The position will involve some international travel.

This position is contingent upon availability of grant funding. Position is in New York City with hybrid work arrangement, including 2-3 days in the office/week. Must reside within commutable distance of New York City.


Responsibilities

Program Management (40%)

•Provide overall management support for the GATE program, the GATE team, and with institutional and global partners.
•Manage contracting and payment processes, including consultants, subawards and vendors, and the team’s financial processes such as reports, budgets, and labor accounting.
•Provide oversight of program budgeting, including preparation of budgets for new proposals,and manage donor reporting.
•Manage junior staff and students, including recruiting, onboarding, mentoring, and overseeing quality control of their deliverables.
•Provide guidance to staff on completing tasks in Columbia Institutional Review Board platform (IRB) for research projects, and financial processes in the Columbia system.
•Manage or support meeting planning and coordination with partner organizations and stakeholder groups.
•Provide oversight and inputs for research translation efforts, including the development of policy briefs, webinars, knowledge management products (infographics, toolkits), and other advocacy outputs.
•Develop and support student-oriented programming and activities.

Research and Writing (30%)

•Support the director in managing research operations and partnerships in the US and/or in low-resource contexts, including research protocol development, qualitative and mixed-methods research study design and supporting materials, data collection activities, data analysis and preparation of scientific manuscripts.
•Oversee or support training of local and global research teams as needed.
•Mentor and manage students who support the research (e.g., data analysis, IRB procedures).
•Lead or support the submission of scientific manuscripts to academic journals.
•Present research findings at academic or practice-oriented conferences.

Fundraising and development (25%)

•Collaborate in business development strategies, including identifying new funding opportunities (grants, gifts) and donors, and conceptualizing new program activities or research projects.
•Lead or support the development of grant proposals and concept notes (solicited or unsolicited) and management of submission processes.
•Lead financial planning and budgeting, applying an understanding of the unique financial dynamics of academic programs and research initiatives.

Other (5%)

•Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience


Minimum Qualifications

•Master’s degree in public health, development studies and/or social science fields, public administration, health communications.
•Experience with conducting qualitative research, from proposal development through data collection, analysis, and writing of scientific manuscripts.
•Ability to manage program budgets and administrative tasks within an academic institution.
•Business development skills, including identifying relevant opportunities, engaging donors,grant writing, and management and reporting.
•Experience communicating technical content to diverse audiences, such as public health practitioners, policy makers and advocates.
•Program management experience in direct and supervisory roles in multi-project program with multiple sources of funding.
•Interest and enthusiasm for GATE technical areas, including menstrual health and hygiene(MHH), gender and public health, sanitation, and qualitative research, and policy, advocacy,and partnership development.
•Enthusiasm to collaborate with a dynamic network of global partners.
•Superb interpersonal skills, flexibility, detail-oriented approach, and a willingness to multi-task on numerous tasks at once.
•Ability to travel up to 20-25% of the time in US and global contexts, including low-income country contexts.
•Strong ability to work independently and as a key member of a team.
•Software skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, data analysis (Dedoose, Nvivo, etc.), Zotero,budgeting software.
•Detail oriented, with previous management experience of multiple team members.
•Prior experience with conducting qualitative research (data collection, data analysis, writing of scientific manuscripts).
•Prior experience in grant writing and management.
•Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills, including editorial skills.


Preferred Qualifications

•PhD or DrPH in public health or equivalent in the social sciences or related field.
•4-6+ years post-master’s degree and/or relevant work experience in academic, non-profit, or public sector institution. or project planning, preferably with global activities.
•Enthusiasm for working on projects which support adolescent development and health,menstrual health and hygiene, and gender and sanitation.
•Experience conducting or supporting public-health related research in low-resource global and/or US contexts.
•Prior work and/or living experience in low-income countries.
