The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of South Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine is seeking to fill an Associate Professor, Research position.
The Associate Professor, Research is a non-tenure track faculty position with responsibilities for education, service, and oversight and development of the Bioimaging Core Facilities at the College of Medicine and the Mitchell Cancer Institute. Qualifications include a Ph.D., a strong record of research accomplishments, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the biomedical sciences. Applicants should have at least ten years of experience in core facility management and experience with a range of microscope systems, including Nikon, Zeiss, and Olympus. Applicants must have expertise in widefield, confocal, spectral, and super-resolution microscopy. Applicants must also have extensive experience with image analysis, scientific computing, statistical analysis, and database management, including expertise in Python and other programming languages used for scientific analysis. Detailed below are the key responsibilities of this position:
1. Education: Contributions to education are essential components of the Associate Professor, Research position, encompassing a range of instructional activities in both classroom and laboratory settings. Educational activities include graduate student training and advising, classroom instruction at the graduate and undergraduate level, and training for all users of the Bioimaging Facilities in instrument usage and data analysis.
2. Extramural Funding: The Associate Professor, Research will support the submission of grant applications (e.g., NIH and NSF) to procure extramural funding for the purchase of major equipment and to support ongoing research activities in the College of Medicine. These may include instrumentation grants submitted as Principal Investigator and/or collaborative investigator-initiated research proposals as Co-Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, or Principal Investigator.
3. Experimental Design and Data Analysis: The Associate Professor, Research will provide leadership in establishing best practices for experimental design and data analysis for the Core Facilities to ensure experimental reproducibility and analytical rigor. This will include advising investigators in experimental design, establishing appropriate imaging parameters, identifying appropriate statistical analyses and analysis software, and, when necessary, developing novel programs or scripts to meet scientific needs.
4. Vision for Facilities Development: The Associate Professor, Research will, in collaboration with the Bioimaging Advisory Committee, develop a plan for the continuing development of the Facilities, including new instrument acquisition, hiring additional staff, maintenance/repurposing of older equipment, and disposal of non-functioning equipment.
5. Scientific Productivity: The Associate Professor, Research is expected to participate in collaborative research that advances the research mission of the College of Medicine and the Mitchell Cancer Institute and enhances the value of the Bioimaging Core Facilities through the development of novel instrumentation, experimental techniques, software tools, and the publication and presentation of original, peer-reviewed research.
6. Oversight of Bioimaging Core Facilities: a. Training: The Associate Professor, Research is responsible for providing training for all users of the facilities, maintaining a log of trained users, ongoing evaluation of users, and provision of retraining as needed.
b. Invoice Generation and Record Keeping: The Associate Professor, Research is responsible for maintaining accurate records of instrument usage, generating and submitting invoices, and creating reports. c. Performance Analytics: The Associate Professor, Research will design and implement policies for the ongoing assessment of facility performance and the integration of user feedback.
7. Professional Development: The Associate Professor, Research will be expected to maintain currency in relevant fields of biology and scientific imaging and continue to develop and expand their expertise by attending and presenting original work at professional conferences and workshops.
8. Service: The Associate Professor, Research is expected to participate in service activities for both the local and broader academic communities, including serving on institutional committees at the College of Medicine and Mitchell Cancer Institute, serving on dissertation committees for graduate students, participation in community outreach activities, and service to the broader academic community, including peer review of publications and grant submissions.
