Department Statistics
About the Department
The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University was founded in 1941 by Gertrude M. Cox and is one of the oldest and largest statistics programs in the country. The primary function of the Department is to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and world-wide, within a cohesive department, where all students, faculty, and staff receive fair treatment. The Department has over 40 faculty members, most of whom are housed in SAS Hall on the University’s main campus, along with more than 260 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. We are the “birthplace” of SAS Institute, the world’s largest privately owned software company, and one that specializes in statistical applications. The Department maintains a close relationship with SAS and other industry partners through student programs and activities.
The Department has expertise in several research areas and strong ties with the Data Science Academy and the Genetics and Genomics Academy at NC State. Our graduate program, which is the top producer of statistics PhDs, was recently ranked 11th in the nation and 28th in the world ; we also have a thriving online master’s program with approximately 100 students.
Please visit our Sciences Strategic Plan and the College of Sciences Culture Charter to learn more about the College of Sciences.
NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem-solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State’s land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Applicants are encouraged to review the institution’s mission, vision and strategic plan, and consider how their background, interest and experience would enable them to support the university.
Essential Job Duties
Department of Statistics, College of Sciences (COS)
The Department of Statistics seeks to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and worldwide. It does so within a cohesive department with a commitment to creating work environments that are in alignment with our mission, vision, and values. The Department of Statistics within the COS helps to set the bar on campus for statistical methods and interdisciplinary scholarship, collaborating with many departments, both within and outside of the COS. COS also plays a key collaborative role in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program clusters, including those in Bioinformatics and Data-Driven Science.
Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs
The Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs, a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the programmatic planning and implementation of university-wide interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. The unit focuses on bringing interdisciplinary approaches to local and global societal challenges in light of long-term predictions and scenarios. This office builds on 20 Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program clusters that came out of NC State’s previous strategic plan. Both the COS and the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs play an integral role in interdisciplinary efforts on and off campus, including with the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, the Data Science Academy, the Genetics and Genomics Academy, and the Integrative Sciences Initiative and Building.
Bioinformatics Research Center (BRC)
The BRC at NC State University was founded in 2000 in recognition of the fact that quantitative methods applied to massive datasets are essential to the comprehension of the genomic structure of even the simplest organisms. The intersection between biology, statistics, and computer science makes the BRC and its programs unique in that other bioinformatics programs may place less emphasis on statistics. However, the BRC and the closely connected graduate training program are both direct descendants of the longstanding strength at NC State in statistical and quantitative genetics. The BRC has also developed strong relationships with industrial partners and other academic or government organizations in the Research Triangle Park area. Please visit https://brc.ncsu.edu/ to learn more about the BRC.

  • Working in close collaboration with other units in the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs to bring bioinformatics-centered interdisciplinary approaches to students and faculty across all ten NC State colleges;
  • Maintaining and growing the connections between the Bioinformatics Research Center and other scholars on campus and in the regional community
  • Working with the COS Dean and Assistant Vice Provost for University Interdisciplinary Initiatives to develop fundraising objectives and philanthropic opportunities associated with bioinformatics on campus.
