JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Geography at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) invites applications for an Associate Professor position in Geographic Information Science and Environmental Health. This is a tenure-track, 36-week appointment (two academic semesters), with the possibility of reappointment. 

Particular thematic areas of interest are the environmental and social determinants of health, with a focus on spatial analysis and modeling, health disparities, and environmental spatial epidemiology. Regional experience is open though experience working with indigenous populations is welcome. Applicants should explain in their cover letter how their work would complement existing strengths in GIScience research and education in the Department of Geography at Penn State.
The tenure home for the position is the Department of Geography, in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS). EMS houses research programs spanning a broad range of the environmental sciences. The College is committed to fostering interdisciplinary research and education, and to wide searches for outstanding candidates. Thus, strong candidates will be considered across a broad range of disciplinary expertise.

Successful applicants will be expected to engage with our active research and teaching community by developing a vigorous, externally funded research program, complementing the Department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching mission by teaching courses and providing research training, including its Online Geospatial Education programs, and working to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in Geography and EMS. The Department’s research clusters include six intersectional areas within the discipline (https://www.geog.psu.edu/research).

The appointment could begin as early as July 1, 2024, pending the successful completion of a background check and completion of a Ph.D. degree. This position is located at the University Park campus, and the professor will be appointed in the Department of Geography.
