Description of Work
The UNL Food Processing Center is a multi-disciplinary resource for the food industry, providing a combination of consulting, educational, technical, and business development services. Our mission is to advance the food industry by applying science, investing in people, and building businesses.
As the Associate Pilot Plant Manager, you will:
  • Share responsibility for the operation of the pilot plants of The Food Processing Center (FPC) and how they function.
  • Work directly with clients as well as University faculty and staff members in the coordination and implementation of confidential food-related research and development projects in the pilot plants.
  • Communicate with the clients and other FPC team members to define the project, make proposals for/to clients for work to be performed in the pilot plants, schedule work, keep project and equipment records, order ingredients and supplies, report data and results, submit invoices and provide other needed technical assistance.
  • Operate and upkeep processing equipment, use chemicals in food processing and sanitation and handle food ingredients.

This position requires physical work including lifting, standing for extended periods of time, and climbing, bending, and twisting. There is potential exposure to warm, cold, humid, dusty, loud conditions.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in food science or a closely related field plus six months hands-on experience in the operation of mechanized processing equipment.
  • Knowledge of food science.
  • Strong mechanical skills.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle the physical nature of the work in the pilot plants required.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
  • Master’s degree in food science or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience in a food production environment including some level of project management and operation of processing equipment.
  • Experience with quality control/quality analysis.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • HACCP and/or PCQI certification.
