The University of Vermont’s (UVM) Department of Education in the College of Education and Social Services invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor (tenure-track) for a full-time (9-month) appointment in Literacy and/or Educator Preparation related to Literacy to join our nationally recognized and award-winning faculty. The position will start in Fall of 2024.
We seek a nationally recognized scholar who is well-versed in the research and practices of the discipline, including evidence-based approaches to teaching foundational literacy and preparing educators who are highly skilled to use these practices in educational contexts. We are particularly interested in individuals with an active research agenda and a history of external funding, strong teaching skills, and a record of engaged collaborative service with faculty, field-based partners, and state agencies.
Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in relevant discipline;
  • Record of scholarship and field leadership appropriate for a tenured appointment at the commensurate rank;
  • Record of successful state or federal grant writing/extramural funding commensurate with rank;
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate/graduate levels;
  • Strong collegial, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills;
  • Interest in program building, curricular revision, and field-based educator preparation; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice in research, teaching, and service.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include:
  • Maintaining an active research agenda, securing external funding, publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals, maintain state and national/international visibility.
  • Co-leading curricular revision and program development in evidence-based literacy practices and literacy instruction with faculty and field-based partners.
  • Teaching and advising in undergraduate and graduate educator preparation programs.
  • Serving as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations.
  • Engaging in service and outreach activities at the college, university, regional, state, national and/or international levels.
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff in departmental governance, program development, scholarship, and service.

The Community

UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic, and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.
