The Department of Visual Art invites candidates to apply for a tenured faculty position in Sculpture at the Associate/Full Professor level. The successful candidate will join a faculty of artist-educators committed to flexible, freethinking, experimental and enlightened explorations of the transformative role of art across cultures. We support the diverse material, technical, philosophical and critical influences that expand the boundaries of contemporary art today. Our objective is to continuously examine and renew an educational environment of empathy and emotional intelligence that leads to the expansive growth of individual artists.
The University of Kansas Department of Visual Art welcomes applicants whose creative research focuses on sculpture defined broadly and fluidly; by possibilities that range from materially-based traditional practices, to explorations of spatial poetics, from performance, film and digital media to web-based and evolving technologies and interpersonal and social based systems. We are interested in candidates whose creative research concentrates on sculpture that is original, perceptive, conceptually strong and technically innovative.
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to imagine and launch new initiatives within an established, but aging sculpture facility that includes foundry, woodworking and welding studios. They/he/she will work closely with the Ceramics area, as well as across the six areas of study that comprise the Department of Visual Art (ceramics, expanded media, fibers, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting and printmaking) to introduce cross-disciplinary programming, imagine facility renovation and implement fundraising initiatives.
The position is expected to begin August 18, 2020. The faculty member will be expected to research and exhibit in their field, develop and teach undergraduate courses in sculpture, serve on graduate and thesis committees, perform advising responsibilities and serve on departmental, college and university committees. As this is a tenured appointment, the successful faculty member must meet all standards for tenure at either an associate or full professor level at the University of Kansas and/or have an equivalent rank at a comparable institution and/or the substantive and significant professional experience to meet criteria for tenure at KU.
In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, the university actively encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups in higher education. The successful candidate must have appropriate work authorization by time of appointment.
